  2. Churchill talked a lot about how important a "Germany First" war aim was, until the United States actually was involved in the war with Germany. Then he switched rather abruptly to inveigling the United States in his own war aim —- protecting the British Empire. The way to do that was NOT a "Germany First" strategy, but, it turned out, an "Africa First" strategy. After that, a "Sicily Second" strategy, and after that an "Italy 3rd" strategy.

Following that, Churchill had other ambitions in the Balkans that he wanted Americans to fight for him.

Roosevelt's war aim of keeping the USSR busy killing Germans had a LOT of merit. Stalin's idea in the 1930s, through his alliance with Hitler to dismember Poland, was to encourage another world war, which he anticipated would be a repeat of the exhausting WWI struggle, with the USSR sitting it out un til both sides were exhausted,, at which point the USSR could invade Europe and capture all the marbles.

Imagine Stalin's disappointment when France collapsed and he found himself as the major power in Europe opposing Hitler!

  3. I was not aware that tanker sinkings and demand in the Atlantic were dramatically affecting oil supplies for the US Navy in the Pacific. I was always under the impression that the United States was swimming in supplies of oil. That would make an interesting video on it's own, especially about how that changed during the course of thew war.
