  1. I can see where people had issues with the live action (especially how non-natural some of the dialogue sounded), and the original animation will always hold a special place in my heart. Having said that, I think I just enjoy the story so much that I still enjoyed the live-action version too. The bending was fun to watch too.

  2. Literally just got an ad on YouTube from the US Air Force recruitment center promoting the Netflix live action.
The show has an identity crisis. It’s supposed to be anti-imperialist, but is now being promoted by imperialists to recruit people. It’s shameful how they’ve butchered every character and plot line they could. I definitely see why the creators decided to step away.

  3. You are so right about the old people, that granny in this series was like "Listen dude, your whole race was wiped out and you're next! Also you are the avatar, now go and save the world and grief later, I don't care that you are still a little child with a fragile mind!"

  4. The series is not bad, but they tried to put too many things from the original story into one arc. The OG has such a good storytelling and pace, and for the live action they killed it with what they cut/ how they changed the story. I still think that the live action is one of the best live actions we ever got after One piece

  5. my thing with the show, at first i was constantly comparing it to the animation while watching it, but then they actually got me with emotion at some point, and i thought, if i just look at this as a bunch of people that are trying their best to do the story, but kinda change it for entertainment and to make it fresh, i started to really really enjoy it. I had to revert back to my memory of enjoying the first show and not critiquing everything about it, and just love the universe of avatar all over again. The original show is perfection, so to compare is only going to produce hate. Im glad that i dont know exactly whats going to happen all over again, but with the same characters.

  6. Right off the top: thank you for addressing the 'if you're very good I'll turn you into a real bo– I mean live action'. As someone who works in animation it drives us all crazy, especially when execs so often pick animated movies/shows that used the medium to the fullest and then shoot it in the most boring static camera ever. I actually enjoyed the AtLA remake, though it did make me feel like re-watching the original too. You absolutely need to watch the original series. Trust me when I say online snippets don't do it justice. Especially in your line of work, AtLA influenced pretty much every creative professional in my generation, so it's pretty important to have that context. It's also a shining example of what animated shows can be when they're allowed to be it.
For the remake, I actually enjoyed Sokka being cheesy in this one because in the animated series (and in this one) he's always putting up a front/performing, both as a teen trying to look cool and as a kid trying to fill the huge shoes left for him by the war. He's always cosplaying what he thinks a 'good grownup leader' would be, so him being over the top works sometimes imo. I was a lot more disappointed with the actress they got for Katara. She's cute as a button but she's just a really bad actress, and unlike a lot of the other actors it seems like she doesn't have martial arts experience either. The firebending fights look pretty cool (not usually based on the right forms, but they're still cool to look at, fast paced, dynamic, etc.) but the waterbending scenes really fell flat in comparison. They were slow and it seemed like she wasn't really familiar with the moves, and they didn't pick camera angles that would help mask that. They also wrote her a lot of no-teen-would-ever-talk-like-this dialogue, which doesn't help.
I agree that the outfits look too clean, but roughing stuff up creates a lot of issues with consistency, which can be expensive. Considering the first LotR movie had like a $500 million budget (way more if you adjust for inflation), I think it's understandable that the show would have to take economies, and this seemed like a reasonable one. I did like the costumes overall; they were much truer to the original and the influencing cultures than the old live action was, and you can tell they were intentional about colors, patterns, even types of fabric in some cases between the different nations.
I'd say my main complaints were Katara's acting and Bumi's facial prosthetics. Other than that, I honestly really enjoyed the show. It must have been a major challenge to fit 40+ episodes of world building and character development into just 8 eps, so I think they did a reasonably good job within those constraints.

  7. And whatdayaknow, Netflix "Netflixed" once again… I knew this would happen when the original creators left before they started shooting.
I don't mind writers changing some lines here and there, but they butchered any and all dialogues…
The script is on par with trashy Disney live-action series from the 2000's. Cringy as feck and unbearable, which the original Avatar isn't.

  8. The neutering of Katara pisses me off so much. Who is this and what have you done to Katara? That is NOT Katara. The fact that they took away all of her passion, drive, fiery spirit and iron will determination is downright insulting.

And the fact that she barely has to try with her waterbending to be good at it is insane. We’re not stupid Netflix. One conversation with Aang does not a powerful water bender make.

    That is NOT Katara.

  9. oooo I'd heard the expositing was bad in the first episode but
    oooooooooo that's….ooo.

I promise the animated show is actually good. And hey, this at least looks like its an improvement over the movie that doesn't exist, so…yay for this show I guess. I'm still never gonna watch it cos I actually love the original too much to do that to myself lol.
