Let’s not beat around the bush here: Most MMOs suck. They either look like bad, play bad, or have a money-hungry studio seeking to milk its players with their horrendous predatory business model.
Which – I guess if we think about it is kind of why the genre is in such a sad, stagnant state right now, huh? Imagine if these same studios made good games, and cared about the longevity of their product as opposed to their short-term financial return?
In a sea of mediocrity, very few games tend to stand out. But several do, and have proceeded to make a name for themselves.
These games have left their mark on history, and continue to garner the attention, the time and the resources of talented staff and loyal players.
These MMOs are arguably some of the only titles worth playing left. These are the – as of the end of 2022 – most played MMORPGs sorted by least to most popular.

MMOs included in this video:
EVE Online
RuneScape
Albion Online
The Elder Scrolls Online
Black Desert Online
Guild Wars 2
Lost Ark
Tower of Fantasy
Final Fantasy XIV
World of Warcraft

  1. The problem with RuneScape/osrs is that half the online players are bots and free to play is dreadful and not very fun. PvP is basically dead unless you are maxed. But pay to play is fun even without pvp. Just a lot of bots and lurers

  2. Honestly…. I'm pretty sick and tired of ESO. I'm taking a forced brake from it for about a month. But to be honest…. I might not even go back to it at all. BDO or even neverwinter might be where I go when I'm available to play again.

  3. We had a lot of hope with New world and lost ark and now look at us. I think Ashes of creation will be the last chance I give to an MMO. I'm tired of this abusive genre that only disappoints and saddens you

  4. If you want weird but loyal base, Project Gorgon. Your toon can do shrooms with Mushroom Jack, bang NPCs, meet the NPC who did it with a tornado. And kill shit. Switch classes whenever you feel like it. Graphics right out of 1997!

  5. Unrelated but we need Dragon Quest X localized in the west seeing how well it's been doing in Japan
And Dragon quest XI sold really well so there's nothing holding them back

  6. Elder Scrolls Online has been having a lot of backlash lately for some of their recent updates, even I have stopped playing it mainly cause they killed DoT builds which I loved playing

  7. you said it perfectly: if just one project tries for the best ever game with a plan over years and above genre to make a game where it'd promised to be cared fever years ppl would partake and Pau and support. the one who delivers this wins. PERFECT.

  8. Its sad to see WoW above FF14, if this was any other year I would have agreed. But after the absolute record-breaking launch that was FF14's endwalker expansion and long awaited GW2 release on Steam, and after the reputation-destroying and game-breaking expansion that was shadowlands, I feel WoW has lost what made it great almost to the point of incompetence. WoTLK classic is just that, old content that people have nostalgia for. The fact that it needs to be re-released as its own game and its story isn't present in retail to allow new players to experience it proves that WoW's game-design is reductive and short-sighted as it destroys its own legacy. As for FF14 potentially losing players after the expansion launch period, I believe it to be unfair to look at at it and go, "The game isn't as popular". Which also shows me that you made this list by taking only the active players at the most recent months, Both FF14 and GW2 had an explosive overall growth in their player counts overall due to a new expansion and the Steam release respectively; just that it happened 3 months to a year ago. WoW is seeing a surge in popularity now due to WoTLK classic, but these numbers will crater in less than 2 months, far faster than both GW2 and FF14. All this is to say that please make these lists taking the whole years average player count figures rather that just googling the latest player count figures and ranking them in ascending order. If this list was intended that way, might I suggest re-wording the title so as to not mislead watchers. This is not a list of most player MMORPG's overall of 2022, its the list of most played MMORPG's as of the moment of recording this video.

  9. MMOByte Runescape will always be a classic, I remember years ago around the 2010s when clans used to have 100 v 100+ people in wilderness fighting against each other you should look up RuneScape Dinasty/Violent Resolution/Reign of terror and the Jagex Cup those were some wild times.
