The infection test at the smaller devices does hurt you. Assuming it's inspired by The Thing like the rest of the game, you're pretty much just zapping a bit of your blood with a hot wire to see if it triggers any self-preservation instincts in the blood. Human blood (and most blood on Earth presumably, but I'm no hematologist) will just sit there because it has no instincts, but blood infected by stuff like this will freak out if it detects environmental danger like electricity or fire.
