My only issue with the film was the contemporary American style English being spoken, kind of stripping the film of some of its authenticity a bit. Next time I watch it will be in Comanche and with subtitles. That's no issue for me, as I enjoy foreign films on occasion as well.
That said, I absolutely loved the film, and it is my second favorite after the first – and it could overtake the first for me, the more I watch it. I thought it had a more substantial plot and better acting than all of the other films.
And I'm sure I speak for a good number of people here, when I say that I wish I could go see it on the fucking silver screen instead of just on my smart TV and Hulu!
Speaking english didn't bother me at all. For one thing there wasn't a lot of dialogue, so it wasn't a key part of the film. Secondly, let's see… anything biblical Ben Hur, Spartacus, Gladiator and every World War 2 movie depicting Nazi's (Schindler's List) and even the monkeys in all the Planet of the Apes movies all spoke english. They shouldn't have of course but most people don't want to read their movies and film companies want to make money so……I think Jamie and Chris should just relax a little.
I think its been far too long to see a woman that reminded me of "Ellen Ripley!!" I think the writers did a decent job of showing a female kick ass!!! And a young person at that.
Look back in Native American lore , they have traditionally been some of the toughest people in human experience.
The Rogue One of Predator films.
Not an awful movie but not a masterpiece.
At one point a Comanche goes to piss and tells the girl he’s “going to the bathroom” which is just bizarre. Also the gun… according to a comic it’s origin is from when a predator teamed up with a pirate in 1712 or whatever, so why tf would the French guy have it, considering a predator ends up giving it to Danny Glover? Doesn’t make any sense and completely ruins that moment in P2. I liked it overall, but it didn’t take too many risks. 3.5/5 stars for me.
I don't agree that modern viewers want to hear modern day English. Look how well "The Witch" and "The Lighthouse" recently did with MASS audiences.
My only thing is some of the graphics were laughable, the gory scenes should have been more visible and it should not have been in English. I enjoyed it. Great vid.
I watched the film yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. The cinematography warranted a cinema release, the cast were great and there were plenty of strong predator moments. I wish there was no English spoken (it would have made it more authentic) but that's a minor gripe. Bring on Predators in feudal Japan or against the Vikings!
Hello Pete could you please do the ranking of the Batman films? I know you are a fan of the comics and I think many people would watch the ranking of the Batman movies. Thanks so much for all your work.
I thought it was alright but a bit lackluster. I came away thinking…"that's it". I was just hoping for a twist or something intriguing to make it more interesting. The CGI could have been a bit better too. I'll give it a 6.5 out of 10. Above average to decent.
Hey, when is Pete and Laszlo going to do the "ranking the albums of Pat Benatar"? Long overdue.
Enjoyed this movie and it easily redeems the franchise after the terrible fourth Predator film from 2018. I thought Midthunder was a great lead and I liked the back-to-basics approach of the story and action.
It's too early to determine where I would place it in the overall series, but it definitely tops The Predator and the two forgettable AVP movies. Looking forward to watching it again!
Very much looking forward to watching this over the weekend. From what I've read via a variety of reviews, this is a good film that was written, and directed in a safe manner as to not repeat the abomination that was "The Predator".
Hated the CGI blood. Never looks authentic. And I hope they don't continue with the Prey narrative. It would be so much better to show different time periods iinstead.
I enjoyed the film. Probably my 3rd favorite of the series. Always enjoy when King Alo is on. Having Jamie and Davy on is always an added bonus. Thanks for all you do Pete. SOT IS THE BEST CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE.
A WOKE Predator. Yawn
I found it pretty "meh" — standards are so low these days….it didnt completely suck so some are calling it THE GREATEST EVA! Thats how it goes nowadays. If inflation doesnt double again this month, it counts as being zero.
Alo nailed it….per usual. They spoke like douchey modern teens…..that made it of a place & time — garbage era America circa 2022. I was never engaged because of that choice….and its a lazy choice. No reason is valid. Did you really try to blame us, the audience, for that hideous trend, Pete? Seriously? Thats like saying "Look what you made me do" after punching your wife in the face. Terrible terrible take.
Asking someone to have "a little faith" in Disney is like asking an sexual abuse victim to "just give the Catholic church another chance, and go kneel in front of that creepy naked priest"
I love ya Laszlo – but you know better than that.
I disagree with Craig — Its always better when the lead looks hot….at least is a fluff movie about fighting space aliens….but this was as hot as she gets. A tube top wouldnt have helped.
Overall Prey is just another remake/reboot/reimagine. Do the original Predator again….but go with the trendy "diversity" angle & make it with native tribes. I found it predictable & soulless…..maybe that was the modern dialogue sucking the believability out of it….but it was competently made, and there was obviously some talent on the set.
Its like Monet copying a Renoir painting but changing the season. Okay. Ive seen it already. You cant fool me with some aesthetic choices….but sure….you can paint, Sir.
Redo popular film – race swap. Next.
Its exhaustingly lame. The dialogue all feels written by a high school student.
Im tired of it.
Prey is just another cookie cutter remake/reboot/reimagine.
I just find it harder and harder to enjoy them.
In the copy I seen the Comanche needs a shit and says i'm going to squat. I think it's my third fav Predator, behind the original and Predators.
Great review on Prey by you and your A team! Haven't watched any Predator movies since the first one long ago and your pros&cons review makes me want to check it out. Great job!
Such a crap of the movie
Cmon Jaime it’s a Predator movie Daniel Day Lewis isnt in this thing who cares about the language? It’s a movie on Hulu for a dumbed down audience not the Cannes film festival.
Thanks gentlemen and some great commentary. I thought this was a good film and would rank it 3rd in the franchise, after Predator and Predators, but significantly better than P2 and The Predator. There were 2 noticeable flaws of note: When she saw and heard the ship in the sky it made no sense that the surrounding people did not. Also, a snake which takes a bladed weapon through the head and skinned from head to tail would have died immediately. Cinematography, acting, plot, were all very good, but the CGI was not impressive, and the contemporary English was definitely a detraction and a clear short cut,, budgetary and otherwise. An enjoyable watch despite a few flaws.
You just hang onto that damn chopper!
Soooo a 'meh' movie…
Anybody see Black Phone? Is it worth a watch?
I plan on seeing Prey. Sounds pretty entertaining.
👍
Great episode, I pretty much agree with all the good points and bad ones about this movie, but unlike Chris I probably will buy one of the new toys.
No Comanche in the northern plains
Good team on this .. 🙂
The first half is boring AF, felt like dollar store Dances With Wolves. The second half had some good action scenes but too many bad CG and half of the kills are off-screen. The nods to the first movie is just lame. The "french" hunters are just bad caricatures, with a horrendous French accent. I didn't believe Adrian Brody could take on the Predator back then and I certainly did not work for me here with Amber. The only positive is the look of the Predator. Much simpler story than the previous one but it will be on my bottom two in the series.
I was very pleasantly surprised. Better cinematography than the others. Very atmospheric. I enjoyed the logic of older technology available to the Predator as well as the prey.
That lady doesn't look like she could beat up Arnie now , let alone a predator. Ridiculous.
Next predator movie in a WW2 setting.
predator versus mongols
Trash
I watched this with my 9 year old daughter & we both enjoyed the movie.
The speaking in contemporary English is off putting but hey so was Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood accent, or Sean Connery who played an Irish cop but still had his Scottish accent. Well when you think about it, Highlander when he plays an Egyptian Spaniard with a Scottish accent!
I’m surprised none of you mentioned her eyes. They were big, not in a negative way, but it’s something you would see in a Disney cartoons or Manga movies, & of course Avatar, where the hero has large eyes to symbolise innocence & youth.
I asked my daughter if she was ok because it was violent in a few places and she said, ‘It’s not put off my appetite. It would need to be more gorier.’
😳
Great show. I loved the movie. I've watched it twice so far. I didn't have a problem with the language. I know it's a translation. I'm sure they didn't use exactly those kinds of words. I'm sure they would have their own kinds of phrases that would mean nothing to us and so I don't mind them translating those phrases to something we would appreciate.
Great episode guys. I also liked the film, but still think your complaints are valid. I also thought they cut away from the gore too often.
It had it's moments but i though it was a little bland. Didn't really care for the characters much. Felt like a Dark Horse short story that they streched out to a full movie.
Didn't like the face of the predator and the language. Could have been a great episode of a predator series. just 45 min. predator stories in different times and planets.
I started watching without knowing its a predator movie. Was excited when I heard the unmistakeable clicking sound. I'd give it a B. The language didn't bother me, probably better to fill out the time with something else than the French trappers but I suppose they wanted to introduce the flintlock. I get the hat tips to the original, but it is a tad overdone. Also the ending with the laser, hmmm why???
I wish they could've done it like in apocalypto, because the modern english ruins the vibe of the movie. It could've been a bit darker with a few shocking scenes or with more suspense. It was entertaining for me, it was kinda boring at times but at the same time it was dynamic enough to keep me engaged until the end.
Many thanks, with the mix of talent and taste on the panel we are bound to get a well rounded and honest review… and we do. Another delight from the Monster's Den.
I love the predator films as a series but find them very up and down in terms of quality. I really enjoyed Prey, but with similar misgivings to the reviewers – the helmet thing at the end was nuts. And why does he have laser targeting but a projectile weapon. Maybe I'm just a grumpy old man, but I found the coming of age thing a bit tiresome and cliched.
But does anyone else find the predator a bit of a cheating, cowardly wimp? He goes invisible and sneakily shoots people with much lesser technology from a distance, and when he does finally go one to one it's always with someone a lot smaller and weaker than himself (ok I'll give him the bear in this one).
I think the default settings were wrong and I only realised later, because I was getting Comanche audio and Comanche subtitles in parts!
