In his book Wetiko: Healing the Mind-Virus That Plagues Our World, Paul Levy argues that all of humanity is under the grasp of a psychological illness: wetiko. Wetiko is a term used in Native American spirituality to describe a “contagious psycho-spiritual disease of the soul” and “a parasite of the mind”. In his book, Levy argues that the concept of ‘wetiko’ is present not just among the Native Americans, but in several spiritual traditions, including Kabbalah, Vedanta, and even the psychology of Carl Jung! He writes:
“Wetiko is a cannibalizing force driven by insatiable greed, appetite without satisfaction, consumption as an end in itself, and war for its own sake, against other tribes, species, nature, and even the individual’s own humanity. It is a disease of the soul, and being a disease of the soul, we all potentially have wetiko, as it pervades and informs the underlying field of consciousness. Any one of us at any moment can fall into our unconscious and unwittingly become an instrument for the evil of wetiko to act itself out through us and incarnate in our world. If we see someone who seems to be taken over by wetiko and we think they have the disease and we don’t, in seeing them as separate we have fallen under the spell of the virus ourselves.”

We can turn the tables, discover wetiko's weaknesses and use it against it. Its weakness is that its not totally malevolent and has a soft spot. Besides, its main tactic is to tempt with fleeting things. Dont fall for those. Just look dont touch, laugh off those objects and scenarios and focus on what matters the most. Build a wall between you and desires that are not timely, but keep your desires of good things intact even when they are out of reach. Do the right thing and aim to punish wetiko if it does not change and be good. Theres nothing good or bad thats above humans. Images of God cannot surely be subject to inferior forces for long. No entity wants to live in evil forever or for long. And since no system runs itself entirely, agents of evil cannot hesitate to join good if opportunity arise. Theres no peace in evil thats why. So, to an extent, wetiko, whatever the fk that is, sounds like a cry for help from souls trapped by evil. Only need a change of system, into one that enables transition from evil to good. And only us humans can do that, as far as we are able to choose good over evil. I agree that overcoming evil is not easy or for the faint of heart. Therefore, we have to do it by setting up systems that aim to reduce evil and add to the good. Every step, every action will then incrementally lead to good.

Wetiko sounds a lot like the vibrational state of "desire" in David Hawkins model of consciousness. I actually prefer the term want because I believe there are God given desires which are heart-centered energies that ask us to fulfill our purpose. The level of consiousness,of want described in Hawkin's model is in the negative torroid. The negative torroid is like a recycling whirlpool, energies can go up and down in this vortex. Courage is the pivotal transition point to move into the positive torroid. In Hawkin's model, Desire, or rather "Want" is flanked on either side by fear on the lower end, and anger on the upper end. Desire is the energy of addiction, it has to do with accumulation and greed. Unmet energies at this level can turn into anger or fear easily and activate actions that drive the unachievable satiation of this want.
Wendigo is self-destructive greed. And yes, it is the very heart and soul of capitalism, imperialism and colonialism. It exploits everything, eventually eating itself.
