So it was Jerry Krause’s first year with the Chicago Bulls, and Michael Jordan’s 2nd season. Remember, Michael Jordan had a negative history with George Gervin, dating back to the freeze-out situation, and Gervin’s involvement with Isiah & Magic, among others. The old school players were jealous of MJ’s popularity & rapid rise with endorsements. The bitter old guys. So, Michael & Gervin had history. So, naturally, what does Jerry Krause do? He acquires George Gervin to be Michael Jordan’s teammate…
Jerry Krause had an unrealistic level of optimism about the move: ”We feel we have acquired a guy who is a future Hall of Famer,” Krause said. “He still has a lot left and we have solved a lot of problems in the backcourt with him.”
Michael Jordan said “I have no comment on the trade. Just say I am unhappy.”
And Jerry Krause foolishly said: “These guys will be alright.”
Which led to Michael Jordan humiliating George Gervin in practice, and George Gervin said: “The son of a bitch is crazy,” Gervin told Jeff Eisenband of The Post Game. “He played just as hard at practice as he did in the game. I’ll never forget it, I’m at practice with him one time, I’m lackadaisical going through it and stuff. I say, ‘Dang, young fella.’ He said, ‘Hey, old man, go sit down over there.’ I sat down. I was done. He helped me understand I was done. You’ve only got so long to be on top. I was on top for about 12 years. You only have your turn. My turn was pretty much up. I retired after that.”
So, Jerry Krause’s poor decision making led to Michael Jordan retiring a legend, George Gervin, in practice. Oops.
This was the Chicago Bulls opening game of the season featuring a match-up against the Cleveland Cavaliers featuring Roy Hinson, John Bagley, World B. Free, Ron Anderson, and a bench that just caught fire in this contest. This game came down to the wire, and Michael Jordan put on a great show DESPITE losing important minutes to foul trouble! Enjoy!

Blitz Sports Network PSA: Always remember, the individuals who say “Michael Jordan didn’t face great competition in his era” are trying to tell you something IMPORTANT. They are trying to tell you that they didn’t watch the Michael Jordan era, and there are much better things you could be doing with your time rather than listening to their takes on an era they didn’t even watch. Would you go to someone for an opinion on Shakespeare if they had never seen the plays Macbeth, Hamlet, or Othello? Of course you wouldn’t. Consider the source. Nobody who watched that era would trash the talent all around the league. Michael Jordan played in a great era with a great blend of fierce competitors, awe inspiring athletes, lock down defenders, knock down shooters, and ultra skilled ballers.

🐐
World B Free was a Dog! I remember in the late 70s, early 80s he was giving defenses Hell.
The Iceman had defrosted at this point.🤣🤣I remember when George Gervin played for the Bulls. He was washed up, he had very little left.🏀🏀 A few games after this is when Mike broke his foot and missed 64 games. If Ice had anything left, the Bulls wouldn't have barely made the playoffs, they would've been at least a 6 or 7 seed in the East. Instead, they didnt get the 8th seed until the end of the regular season(with MJ).
Who let Kyle Macy from State Farm on the floor.
Cats like gervin and even Dr j hated hard on Jordan. The knew Jordan was just far superior
Bruce is a God sent. Been following bruce for 10 years at least
Defense won this game, at 24:04 Woolridge forced Henson to turn baseline, and Jordan super fast brought the double team from the other side of the lane
I watched that game live and I thought George was trying to THROW the game
Cocaine is a hell of a drug
Roy Hinson had some nice moves in the post. Peep that Shaq move at 22:45! Yet another high-quality SF from the 80's
Who is Henson? He drop step booming on guys! It was some skilled and athletic guys who don't get talked alot about in the mid 70s to mid 80s.
Number 21 for the cavs looks like he could be LeBron daddy 😆🤣😂
This is a 50 win team with a HEALTHY MJ. Maybe even a 55 win team.
