Fritz Haber is the scientist who arguably most transformed the world.

A huge thanks to Dan Charles for writing a fantastic biography of Fritz Haber, for taking the time to talk to us about it, and providing valuable feedback. This video would not be what it is without his contributions. http://site.danielcharles.us https://ve42.co/Charles

Thanks to Tom de Prinse from Explosions and Fire for helping us with the chemistry of explosives. If you like explosions and/or fire, you will love his channel. https://www.youtube.com/c/ExplosionsFire2

Thanks to Michael Kuiper of CSIRO for the animation of the composition of air – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9JvX58aRfg

Special thanks to Sonya Pemberton, Karl Kruszelnicki, Mary Dobbie, Olivia McRae, and the patreon supporters for giving us feedback on the earlier version of this video.

  1. Can someone explain the flask submerging experiment mentioned in 8:35.
It seems that the purpose of submerging the flask is to increase the pressure of the substance inside it. But given that the flask is not deformable, how would the pressure inside it increase?

  2. YouTube indoctrinates children to pursue genital mutilation, which often ends in suicide when they realize what they have irreversibly done to their natural bodies. So it's a bit hypocritical of alphabet to restrict discussion of suicide directly

  3. Love the video!
Would personally be interested if @veritasium made a video about what 4-wheel drive does for you and what it doesn't. There isn't anything straightforward online currently and I know @veritasium would do an amazing job!

  4. This video is so pertinent to the situation unfolding in front of our eyes in the Middle East

Some of the technology that makes our lives so much better is being actively used to destroy, malign and glorify death there as we watch this.

I pray none of the people reading this are on the receiving end of that side of technology or the ones using it for anything but saving lives.

  5. "You can't always count on youtube monetization"…proceeeds to take down a good video because it was demonitized.
You should be capable of sacrifizing some of the money in order to show things that matter to the community (Given you are already big on youtube). Lead by the example.

  6. Re-liked on the basis that the original video was perfectly well made and YouTube is being a whiny little *** but Veritasium doesn't deserve to suffer for their poor choices.

  7. I was enchanted by this video when I watched it for the first time, but I can't remember which part of the original video has an "OFFENSE" to have censored such a BEAUTIFUL video.

Fiquei encantado com esse video quando assisti pela primeira vez, mas, não consigo lembrar qual parte do video original tem uma "OFENSA" para ter censurado um video tão LINDO.

  8. I refer to the last statement of the video, and have to say that the whole paradigm of "controlling the natural world" is not only the root-cause but also a myth. Natural forces and phenomenon are way beyond any human or human-race controls. A true definition of sustainability will only come by using whats bare minimum. This is also evident by the 2 naturally-occuring processes of ground-nitrogen synthesis. Unabated usages and single-use items (whether decompostable or not) should not be manufactured or even pursued. Earth has enough natural resources to sustain a trillion people, but only if we relinquish. @Veritasium.
