After Episode 9 of Survivor 44, we are back with another Survivor Burning Question.
This week, Rob Cesternino does a deep dive into the history of food negotiations. And, ultimately, the classic and expected twist on Day 16 of every Survivor season where castaways negotiate with Jeff Probst for rice of various portions.
How has food negotiations evolved in the Survivor game over Survivor history?
Jeff Probst has been tempting Survivors with food since the very first season, in Survivor: Africa, continued through Survivor: Amazon, Survivor: Blood Vs. Water, and Survivor: Redemption Island.
But, the game was forever changed when Angelina Keeley on Survivor: David Vs. Goliath negotiated with Jeff for more rice for her tribe, in exchange for sitting out of a challenge.

A bit disappointed the first ever Rice Negotiation in Australian Outback wasn't mentioned, as that episode really highlights the downside of the contestants not having rice.
The panama way of sitting out didn't begin from Guatemala with their merge feast?
Always appreciate your clarity, Rob.
So happy that the “oops all gabler” show has evolved into this amazing series! The mixed media presentation brings the best of the podcasting and YouTube worlds together. Organizing Rob’s thoughts on Survivor and presenting them in a way reminiscent of a peridiam video is just perfect 👍👍👍
I love these types of videos
Survivor is better when the players have a good level of energy.
Abundant food is not required, yet adequate food makes for better TV.
That was my question during the episode. Extra rice, a chicken, a tarp? They didn’t even ask for less players
Although, this round of food negotiation was a bit stale, I like the flip in the script. It’s just another way of looking at the same problem. Like how there are multiple iterations of the trolley problem. Players like Xander and Kane pondered for so long between trying to win immunity and be safe at 1 tribal or get food and be ‘selfless’ to earn favor with the tribe and be safe longer through relationships.
We still get the food drama at camp between Ricard taking a slice of fruit after coming from a reward (which was a wedge between him and Shan) and Noelle citing the fact that Owen hadn’t eaten as why she takes him on reward, we still get enough.
I wish you were producing the show Rob ☹️
another great analysis Rob! thank you for the consistently in-depth content!
Loved burning questions
I hated that Danny's desire to compete ended up being somehow cast as negative. It was so much better when as you said it was selfish to sit out. Very disappointing to see a desire to win and play somehow be villified.
Another excellent deep dive. Thanks Rob!
San Juan Del Sur had the first negotiation, right? “My life is fine”
"Give these people some rice!" Seriously! Not only does rice cooking add to the drama, but no one wants to watch these poor people starve. It inhibits the game and is not fun to watch.
Another great video. I really value your insight on these subjects.
If Jeff ever retires as Host, I recommend Rob as his replacement!!
I love the challenges where it highlights pecking orders like the Coconut one in Pearl Islands.
Also, IT'S NOT A NEGOTIATION IF YOU AREN'T WILLING TO CHANGE THE NUMBER, JEFF.
To the point of giving the players rice, I think Yam Yam summed it up great when he said it woke everyone up. We all love this show for the strategy and the great game plays. You know how you get that? Giving the players food to help fuel their brains. No, they shouldn't be eating lavishly, but we never watched this show to just watch people starve on an island for a month.
Rob, how difficult would it be for you to hash out all of these things over dinner with Jeff Probst? I feel like the show-runners are making a massive mistake not utilizing your insights and ideas. Especially after listening to Jeff this week on his podcast, I really think he needs to discuss these things with someone who will actually push back, as opposed to the yes-men he has on the podcast and seems to have running the show with him. He once called Rob “the smartest player to never win.” Maybe, just maybe, he could turn to said smartest player for some advice on how to change the direction of a show I once loved but now seems to be floundering without a true vision. Rob, please be our savior, reach out to Jeff and lend him a helping hand.
Game Changer Angelina ❤️
Your point about how they’ve flipped the morality of sitting out of the challenge is really strong. It’s ultimately way less compelling now. Though that is interesting on who has sat out of this challenge, especially in the new era.
The old eat or play competitions used to be so much more fun to watch imo. Especially when it was “you can only eat for as long as the challenge is going on”
Didn't sitting out of an immunity challenge for food happen in Guatemala, before Panama?
Here's a random thought I had… Do we think it would be worth exploring throwing in an Eat or Compete while still in tribes? Like every tribe member has the opportunity to choose. It could mean that one person ends up doing the entire challenge themselves while competing against other tribes with more people participating. I guess we'd need to see some new challenges to be able to accommodate it, but I think it would be familiar enough to longtime viewers while making it look fresh for trying something new.
Can you do a Burning Questions on whether it’s a good idea to have winners on a season with retuning players?
Great series! I think the standard eat or compete would work much better than these rice “negotiations”
