@16:57 Its contact tracing for electronics! So that an infected device can be quarantined. Great idea for electronics. Awful idea for people. Could be used nefariously though to shut off a suspects device under the auspices of "infected!" when in fact they're just removing access for other reasons. Governments come to mind.
Yes, the reason I got a Nokia is because I wanna a phone that does not break easy.
Also, I could totally go with paying 10 dollars a year to keep the software up to date, if there was such option.
NFT's are the "Pet Rocks" of the 21st Century. Just like playing marbles at school, where agates had higher value, NFT's are just a IP address, as long as it is hosted on a server somewhere. Once anyone can get there, you can copy and paste it. If a multi-million dollar robot cannot make you a decent cup of coffee, then is is crap. A company that issues shares, then keeps them in a secret box for staff, is corrupt. Buy the shares on the market and give them to your workers as a bonus. Walmart did not say shoplifters are to blame. Only Neo-liberals said that. SBF has 10 years to screw the Regulators. Saving homeless children is not what Level1 Tech approves of.
Yay I got ads! And here's my engagement quota for the day
You just know that the kissing phone peripheral isn't the use case that will dominate the market…
I thought you still had to go in NVIDIA control panel and enable AI Video Upscaling after installing the latest drivers. That's what I did at least. It was disabled by default.
when it comes to upgradeable/repairable phones, I'm ok with an OS that doesn't get updates after the support ends(what is it, 2 or 3 years?) as long as the battery is easy to replace. I used a samsung note 5 up until a year ago when its battery started having charging issues.
LOL, how long until stories are released about someone getting their junk stuck or fried in the virtual kissing device?
Ericsson made phones, but didn't want to. Sony didn't make them, but wanted to. E/// spun off the handset department to S, called it S-E. After a while, the E was dropped, since they barely had anything to do with it anyway. Ericsson primarily is and always was a network equipment (POTS, mobile, LTE, etc.) manufacturer.
Heh, interesting that you guys talked about Pixel Dungeon… I was just looking a bit into it recently.
This game was made open source and has a bunch of variants to play with… that's why it has a bunch of different names.
Shattered Pixel Dungeon is my time waster… btw, if you want to get this securely, it's available on the F-droid store. The original non-modded Pixel Dungeon is also there.
There has been quite a bunch of games added to F-droid overtime… it's not as empty as it was in the past.
I also recommend Unciv.
On the Nokia phone… I'd buy a smartphone with easy removable back, removable battery, up to date OS, generally easier to repair phone even if it had to sacrifice a few stuff like a bit of screen resolution, add more bezels, have a regular fingerprint scanner on it, have lower res cameras, and skip a few other modern hype trends… but I would not buy this Nokia phone. Saying it's repairable is just a marketing gimmick.
Just sharing for those who don't know, the cheap modern Nokia phones are Chinese white label phones with minor modifications, in practice. Worse yet, this Nokia might be a Chinese white label phone that's a couple of years old already.
After the whole buy and sell thing on the Nokia brand, that went from Microsoft back to HMD Global, despite having the Nokia name and HMD Global being based in Finland, the Nokia phone designs and manufacturing just isn't tied to the original Nokia anymore…. HMD Global bought parts of a subsidiary called FIH Mobile, a subsidiary of Foxconn that used to make smartphones for a whole ton of different random brands. It's the white label phone branch of Foxconn.
That's where this is coming from. The Chinese SoC (Unisoc Tiger) that this repairable Nokia phone is using is not only outdated, from 2 years ago, the specs are worse than something like a Snapdragon 835… that's the SoC the Samsung Galaxy S8 had.
I mean, it's cheap, and has a more current version of Android, but it's just gonna run like ass. There's no two ways around this.
If I were going to buy something this cheap and generic anyways, I'd just get something directly from China instead… I'd either pay even less for the same thing, or get something better for the same price.
ps. this is also what Motorola does.
Wendell is already looking thinner. Good job on the new diet! Keep it up! The hardest part will be the long-term maintenance.
7:49 This was on News for reasonable people, and i live in Portland. So far they are ONLY closing 2 stores in the Portland Area. Delta park, and the on one 82nd (there are two) but the ones that are in Portlands "City Limits". Meaning? The ones that are in Multnomah county. (sort of)
It was all due to Crime , theft, and the employee's walking over to Amazon right next door and making much more money then Walmart could pay. There was so much going on at these 2 stores that it was no longer able to staff the stores. I'm not kidding about this one.
For a while? They had to park employee cars at the Amazon lot to make sure the cars did not get broken in.
The other big gripe from a person I spoke with was that the " CUSTOMERS " or "Shoppers" did not like that there were now armed with FIREARMS GUARDS in the store. And this was from a private security company.
I am going to translate that for you. THE PEOPLE THAT WORKED THERE did not like it. And the THIEVES Really REALLY did not like it.
So, they closed 2 of the stores since what was really going on was that they found that most goods stolen from there were being sold on the open market and online. In fact, it was pretty common to see people drive there and buy the stolen goods right there in the parking lot. I saw a leaf blower being sold there that they must of got from the Lowes right down the street.
"Woke cities", Ryan? Seriously? Walmarts have people stealing from them everywhere. Especially major metropolitan areas. You trying to turn it into a "woke" thing is low.
@Ryan TAL bring the Terrorism son.
@Wendell PREACH! NO MORE PENIS ROCKETS TILL YOU FIX YOUR WEBSITE !5:49 TELL IT HOW IT IS! YUSS!!!!
thank you
9:40 I can personally testify to that.
11:25 this smells like CIA.
15:03 how can you "save" at $9.xx an hour? the wages in this country have stagnated since the 1970s, and yet everything else has skyrocketed. This is unsustainable. "Minimum wage'" is to blame here. Viz: it shouldn't be a minimum wage, but rather minimum salary.
algorithms
16:08 please Wendell do an episode on minimal windows installers. PLZ
I can't wait for cameras that fit in a contact lens so I can actually remember where the fuck I put my keys without having to overheat my entire face with glasses
"Linux desktop powers consider uniting for an (Flatpak) app store" – "HAWHAW" right after Ubuntu announce "nomore Flatpak"
Wendell's very brief mentions of his mom make her seem like a creature we only glimpse once a generation and all we know has been built up as cultural mythology.
Is the background the second level from jet grind radio?
My S8 is nearly at the end of its functional life… RIP Nokia
This flows way better without that chick
These layed off kitchen robots will be the first on the frontline when Skynet goes live
whoa – Wendel you lost a lot of weight mate! Haven't seen a show in a while – big difference seeing you now. Great job!!
Nokia or "Nokia-branded products offered by HMD Global Oy"?
There have been a few major companies pulling out of Portland. Some of them like Starbucks cited safety concerns due to the level of crime.
EVs are perfect for the USPS in many thickly settled suburban areas. The postmen in my neighborhood are required to turn off their truck's engine every time they get out of the vehicle. All that starting and stopping of the engine wears out the engine really fast. Internal combustion engines are not lubricated at startup.
Be me in EU: Phone upgrade cycle: New battery for my Nokia 3310 every 3-4 years (chinese replacement battery). PC Upgrade cycle: Every do the math years, as this is typed on an i7-3770 non-K from 2012. What are u 'muricans talkin about? Ryzen? Never heard of her!
Quick note on pixel dungeon, "Shattered PD" is almost universally praised as the best version.
It's basically Shattered or Vanilla
Portland is a woke city? Seems like they would have far fewer people sleeping in tents on the street if that were the case.
Plea bargaining is beyond disgusting.
I find it “horrifying” (one of your favorite words) that your tech show doesn’t know enough about microphone tech to prevent clipping 🤦🏽♂️
Google hid this episode from me last week. I noticed they are hiding lots of content on YT except the political stuff. My feed for the past week has been noticeably over stuffed with politics.
I'd totally buy the Nokia phone if I could find a 13" screen that'll work with it. Perfect car headunit replacement
