The LavenderTowne Hazbin Hotel Redesign Controversy Explained

Recently there’s been a bit of uproar surrounding a hazbin hotel redesign controversy. I’ll break it down.

So the other day youtuber lavendertowne did a video discussing the hazbin casts designs and making her own redesigns of them. The video was poorly researched and contained a bunch of mistakes, like when she coloured over fanart thinking that it was official. The biggest issue was at the end where she showed her redesigns and to put it lightly, people despised them.

Lavender later made a comment apologising saying that she hadn’t actually watched the entire show yet, so to most people it just reaffirmed that the video was made to cash in on the show’s popularity.

Eventually lavender took the video down and did an apology on twitter, saying she’ll do more research and make a second version later.

Overall the video was a disaster and it’s good she apologised, but she should’ve kept the video up. I had an entire script written about the video and redesigns as a whole, but i forgot to download the video and now it’s lost media. I couldn’t find a reupload online, so if any of you have it downloaded please send me it on tiktok instagram or youtube and you’ll have my eternal thanks.

  1. Vizziepop’s designs were some of the most unique I’ve ever seen. I don’t understand why she felt the need to redesign characters as a whole in the first place. And plus- her redesigns felt less vibrant and more boring.

Still though, I’m glad she owned up to it and I still enjoy both artist very much.

  2. I'm going out of my way to not watch Hazbin Hotel (beyond the pilot that I saw when it came out) because I'm very picky about musicals, and even I am like "those redesigns are so lifeless". I know LavenderTowne can make better character designs, I've seen some of her comic, but it's also a crime she doesn't get the point of the character designs. She could've at least watched the pilot. It also rubs be the wrong way because I'm also passionate about character design and the redesigns felt… reductionist and tropey? Probably better words for it but Viv's designs at least conveys personality beyond posing characters.

  3. It's clear the video was poorly made but at least she said it herself that she didn't do research and apologized for it, i don't really care about lavendertowne's art but these redisigns made her art look dirty lmao

  4. It really doesn't feel like LavenderTowne, because the design and quality didn't even look like her normal videos. It felt so off to see those flat color and really wonky design when she normally creates stellar stylistic art >>, it almost feels like an april fools joke ngl.

  5. I think a lot of the concepts she had for the designs were actually pretty cool! I love the idea of alastor being in sepia tone and making Vaggie chubbier. I also think the horns in nifty are kinda fitting making her look crazier are a nice touch .

  6. Holy hell hazbin fans suck sometimes. It’s clear the fandom is full of a ton of teenagers who have no idea how to criticize art or evaluate their own biases. The part of the fandom that use “critique” as an excuse to make dumbass comments about redesigns needs to shut up.

  7. I don't get the controversy of making redesigns of popular show characters, as an avid Hellaverse fan, I think those ones looked great and I could totally see them working if they were official when the show came out. It definitely brings a more expected and slightly more realistic design of people who are in Hell which I think is great. I just think anything anyone does or says about the show is taken out of context, or just to strike controversy by people to get some attention and it's just sad sometimes because the whole series and project as a whole needs more peace as it is an amazing piece of work

  8. I like the idea of sepia Alastor, but no the execution. I also just really don’t like angel’s original head shape but I don’t care for the redesign either. The only real beed I have with this lineup is nifty. The horns look so wrong.

  9. I love the original designs and art style, I don’t understand the hate. So what, they’re all wearing suits and stuff? It’s a HOTEL. So what if they’re all (unrealistically) skinny?? It’s a cartoony art style, what’s your problem…?
