THE LAST OF US: Episode 5 Easter Eggs & Breakdown

The Last of Us returns for episode 5, and two days early too! Thank you Superbowl, but now what am I going to do on sunday? If you answered “rewatch episode 3” then you win the prize. Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) join new comers Henry and Sam as they attempt to escape Kansas city and avoid the tyrannical Kathleen (Melenie Lynsky).

The four of them try to survive by taking a secret underground tunnel system, and then are forced to avoid sniper fire by an old man. Plus this episode finally gives us what we wanted for the last 4, a big hoard of flesh eating zombies lead by a mutha lovin BLOATER!!!. That’s right, the grossest and hardest enemy in the game, next of course to the horrid Rat King!

We also learn the history of the hunters and why Kathleen is so hell bent of finding Henry and Sam. Too bad she won’t get her revenge, because when joel gets behind the sights of a sniper rifle he recreates one of the best levels in the game. Join Max Lichtig and Screen rant as he breaks down the latest episode with all the easter eggs and details you missed!

  1. I enjoyed this episode so much! So many beautiful moments between Sam and Ellie. I also loved the callbacks to Ish’s saga. I was an absolute mess at the end even though I knew what was coming. Just beautiful. 10/10.

  2. The coolest thing about this episode is the fact that they chose a DEAF CHILD TO PLAY SAM. Originally I thought that either Sam couldn't speak, was deaf, or was taught ASL because of them having to sneak around. I'm happy that they went with the second one.

  3. In the game you could kill bloaters. Not easily, but it could be done.

In the show bloaters can’t be killed. I bet even if you had nail bombs, a flamethrower, and Molotov cocktails, it still wouldn’t do a thing.

    I prefer the show

  4. I don't know that I've ever found an exact moment that I lost all interest in continuing to watch someone's show, but.

"Gettin' bloaty with it" actually reminded me that I don't need screen rant anymore for pitch meetings.

  5. Felt too rushed. I felt like they coulda made minimum 3 episodes for the whole Henry segment. The boss lady got killed off so fast, they tried to make an emotional attachment thing between the characters but they tried to fit so much in the one episode that it felt more like “they died already?” Between those who never played the game and those who have. I get why Sam was deaf don’t want to get into it. Wish they coulda made it longer. Don’t like it when it’s rushed but I understand costs and profits in business unfortunately
