  2. puns are Ellie's thing, it was a big part of Left Behind DLC for the first game. great "callback", i really feel like they are hitting their stride with fleshing out the characters and their relationships. I cannot WAIT for the next episode with the tease they left off with this one.

  3. You're getting the next episode early in the US. But here in the UK, We're not getting it until our usual times of 2am Monday morning which is in line with when it is usually screened in the US. And 9pm on Monday night.

  4. I REALLY DON'T LIKE WERE THIS SHOW IS GOING (SORRY)
The production design of the show is top-notch, and continues to impress with this episode. The abandoned city aesthetic was really well done. However, I've gotta be honest. The episode as a whole got me really nervous (something that I also felt during the two previous episodes – but specifically in this one). As someone who played through the games multiple times, and absolutely love it, I worry that they are aiming at fundamentally change the dynamic in the relationship between Joel and Ellie. Overall, I think Joel is pretty well executed (up until this episode), but the writing of Ellie has got me worried since episode two. By the way, this is not a critisism against Bella Ramsey who plays her, but a critisism of how the character is portrayed, through the writing, and compared to the game.

In the game, their relationship is so incredibly well crafted and resonates with the audience because of the chemestry they have, but even more so because of the void the each fill within each other. In the game Joel is a shell when it comes to showing emotions, and its clear that he has constrained that part of himself (as a result of what happened with his daughter). He's closed off and doesn't let people in (besides Tess). But he's hardened and carries a physically strong and combative presence. He's a surviver and respected (feared even) as someone to be contended with.

Ellie on the other hand, is of course sassy as hell, swears alot and will stand up for herself when someone tries to keep her down. However, she is also very caring, and sympathetic towards people in general (unlike Joel). Yet behind that 'seemingly' hardened exterior, there is also a young naive girl who cannot, as of yet, take care of herself, needs help from others, and shows genuine fear when coming face-to-face with the brutal reality of the world outside the quarantine zone. In short, she is portrayed realistically as a 14 year old girl with no experience whatsoever with the post apocalyptic world that is "The Last of Us".

WHY DID THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JOEL & ELLIE IN THE GAME RESONATE WITH MILLIONS OF PEOPLE?
Because it was a two-way beneficial one. And it was clear to the audience even before it became clear to the characters. Joel needed a way out of his resignated, grumpy, no-purpose existence. He needed something to live for again. To feel alive again. When his daughter died all those years ago something in him broke. The journey of "The Last of Us" , from Joel's perspective, was all about repairing that which was broken. This is where Ellie comes in.

For Ellie, her issue/flaw was centered around her inexperience. She needed a parental figure who could teach her how to survive in this world. She is just a child and could not possibly do this by herself. She needed guidence. She needed someone to show her how to hunt, how to shoot, how to get out of a sticky situation. Finally, she needed someone to care for her, like any normal 14 year-old desperately needs. Joel became this person for her. And she looked up to him and respected him immensely.

Together they embarked on a journey together, not knowing what a significant, and positive, change they would each have on each other.

SO WHAT*S WRONG WITH THE SHOW?
The writers have seem to have forgotten this two-way dynamic (or purposefully avoided it, which actually seems more probable given the times we are living in?). I emphasized the writing of Ellie as the one that I feel has been done the most poorly in this regard. Show-Ellie comes across as more capable, more brave, more cynical, and unsympathetic. Truth be told, in certain scenes she actually comes of as a person with latent phychopathic tendencies (fx when Joel beats up and kills the officer, which seems to bring her joy – OR – when she unemotionally walks straight up to an infected and kills it, and leaves like nothing happened). She also doesn't seem to respect Joel, despite him having infinetely more experince than her, and she seems to disobey his command at every turn (as shown explicitly in the previous episode, where Joel tells her to keep her gun in the bag, but she puts it in her pants, despite him telling her not to do so). She also disrepects him from time-to-time, telling him that he can't do this and that (like with the gasoline scene, in which Joel is oddly written as not very cabable or resourceful). Oh, and Ellie also seems to NEVER be afraid??? She doesn't seem to show any kind of real emotions. She just continously cracks of jokes. Game-Ellie is way more balanced and layered. Game-Ellie has a place for fear AND and a place for jokes. And she never seems to be emotionless. She has emotions in spades. And she follows Joels command because she knows it will most likely keep her alive.

The real dealbreaker that I sense coming (Obviously, I can't know for sure since the season is not over, and I really do hope I get proven wrong – though all the signs so far seems to point to me being right), is that the two-way factor-relationship seems to be sacrificed on the alter of Identity politics, replacing it with a one-way dynamic, in which, only Joel grows as a result of the relationship, and not Ellie.

The push for more 'female empowerment' (whatever that is meant to be?) has seen us witness more and more productions, in which females are portrayed as overpowered, flawless and independent. Sadly, this seems to be the case with how the showrunners are portraying Ellie and Joel. Joel, as a man (and a white one at that) is the one with the obvious flaw. He's the one that needs saving (By Ellie). He's also less capable and resourceful than he is in the game. Ellie, on the other hand, seems to be doing fine, even without Joel, as she doesn't follow his advice. She never scared or needs comfort. She knows how to use a gun, even before Joel shows her how. In general, She doesn't seem overwhelmed, or out-of-her-league, with this world that she has never known.

In the show there is a line of dialogue in which Joel says "She's cargo". But in actuality, it seems more like that it is Joel that is the cargo.

If the showrunners decide to sacrifice the two-way dynamic, then, in my opinion, they effectually sacrifice the heart of the show. And for what? For cheap points with the woke segment.

Sorry for my rant. I know you guys keep a positive energy, and I really love you for it. But I also really love the story of "The Last of Us", and I don't like seeing it following down the path of identity politics. I want it to focus on telling the great story (that it already has), and not change it to pander to certain people's bloodlust.

Lastly, I hope I'm proven utterly wrong. But this episode 4 really showed me some elements that really points in the wrong direction, that it is difficult to see the show doing a one-eighty from here.

Love your channel! And sorry again for the not so positive comment. I'm glad you still like the show!

  5. Pedro and Bella are the perfect pair…
I agree about judging a show's casting, I hated the fact that they cast Tom Cruise as Lestat in Anne Rice's Interview With A Vampire. He was nothing like the character in the book. But I can't imagine anyone else playing it. Until now, since they turned it into a TV series, that actor is amazing too.

  6. I'm glad a post apocalyptic show finally addressed the fact that Fuel has a shelf life though if stored correctly is actually only a couple years before it becomes pretty much useless

  7. One of the things that's always bothered me about the story is how 'Ignorant' Ellie is regarding CQC/weapons, and yes, firearms. She's 14 years old at this point, attending a military academy, during a worldwide APOCALYPSE for pete's sake! I began learning how to shoot at '4'. Yes, 'Four!' By seven I was entering competitions and earning trophies/medals. Being a terminal 'Tomboy' (Youngest of four and only daughter), I was scrapping with other kids twice my age/weight from my earliest memories, and while I certainly LOST most of those engagements, I definitely learned a lot about leverage/dirty-fighting tactics!
I just can't picture anyone in this 'World' being that inept at surviving.

    That aside?

It IS nice to see them return to the main characters in the story, though I've no clue what the hell, WHO THE HELL this woman in the other city is supposed to be, or why/how she managed to be the 'Leader' of this band of people in the first place? Neither she or they seem to have their own territory managed.

    ah, well…
