  1. The relationship was in the game in subtext but the show directly elabortes specifically how their relationship was. In the game, frank hanged himself and was ready to bail on bill by using a stolen battery in bills car. The show does it better by making their relationship actually matter to the overall emotional journey all humans must face in this world when deciding to allow love to win.

  2. Oh I cried a lot in this one – especially when realizing as they were getting married that in the world of Last of Us the apocalypse happened about 9 months before gay marriage would have been legalized.

  3. Did you all play the game? They threw away a lot of value in the story as told by the game for this. The game is horrifically tragic. This was an unfortunate departure from what the story is really about. Makes a great Lifetime channel movie though. 🤷🏾‍♂️

  4. It is beautiful how Syntell hides his disagreement with the Gay community but still appreciate this storyline. In the game Bill and Frank were lovers too, only Frank hanged himself because he was infected.

  5. I think you are saying there could be some H**ophobic responses to how they chose to tell this love story but regardless of those sentiments, the writing, and the choice to make the character gay still delivered a love story despite who you choose to love. From what I've heard, the game never really had a background story so the show basically created one and it makes sense. I also like that they are showing someone gay in a completely non-stereotypical light. He was a survivalist and first amendment guy…not typically how gay men are showcased and I loved that character diversity.

  6. This episode in my opinion was disappointing. Instead of sticking with key plotlines from the game they stray away to pander to the gay community and give Bill some unnecessary illogical ending.

All i learn from this episode is that gay love is so toxic that it took the will to survive from a survivalisy who has the audacity to leave some encouraging note to Joel after commiting suicide which makes absolutely no sense.

I'm crossing my fingers that I am wrong and Bill never went through with it.

  7. What you miss with this big change is Bill is there to show the audience what Joel could easily become. You also miss Ellie and Bill's interaction. By the way Frank does exist in the game in a way. And it's hinted at that they were gay.

  8. Bill didn’t change – this just showed another side to who he already was. You’re just seeing that now played out in an actual storyline, and it might make people uncomfortable because of their prejudices (which by the way is not just “having a different idea about love”, or however you put it)

  9. I don't think Bill changed, I just feel like we were able to access a different part of his personality that he was comfortable showing only to Frank, like we all do to our significant others. Change would've been if Bill were completely open to Joel and Tess, for example, but we could see how he treated them just how he treated Frank on their first encounter (in fact he was even a bit more harsh haha). I think this was important because it shows that the creators were careful enough to not really change the character even though they did change how his relationship with Frank developed and ended.

  10. Man, so Jessie Gender made a great video on Ep. 3 with a queer perspective on the episode (which is fantastic). But yeah, I loved this, and I cried, and dang, I felt a little healed, as a queer person watching this.

  11. What a masterclass in story telling. Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett deserve awards for their performances here. Definitely my favorite episode so far.

This was the first episode to make me cry. Just a beautiful heartbreaking episode that will stay with me for a while. In a way Bill and Frank had the happiest ending, they lived a long and satisfying life 😭

  12. I think the show creators finally found the perfect formula for making TV/films based on video games. You take inspiration from the source material and create something new, not simply a blind copy of the story from the game.

  13. Great episode and reaction. Personally, I would've preferred that they stuck closer to the game, mainly for having Bill still alive and interacting with Joel and Ellie. However, the performances were fantastic, so I can't be too mad about it. One thing that really hit me hard beyond Bill & Frank was realizing just how long Tess and Joel had a sorta kinda thing.

  14. My wife and I cried. I think if you know love, you know that intensity. Frank was in the game, him and Bill were trying to get the batter, but frank got bit as he tried to get it by himself solo. But instead of Bill having to kill him, he hung himself.

  15. Give me a Bill in the apocalypse. I mean he can look like Joel too 😉. I’ve never played the game but I liked Bill and Frank’s story. For me gave another perspective of what’s going on through their eyes. Bill and Frank were living a total different life from what we saw in episodes 1&2 with Joel, Tess, and Ellie.

  16. I think the bill you meet in the game never compromised with Frank, stayed controlling and didn’t let Frank love him the way he wanted until eventually Frank hated him and left. You can find Frank’s body in the game. He got bit and hung himself before he turned and left a bitter suicide hate note.

Here we see a version of Bill that let himself love and live a fulfilled life instead of surviving alone.

  17. Ellie is Joel's Frank. The parallels between the two were numerous, especially for people who have played the games. Would love to see the 2 hour long director's cut of this episode.

  18. In older houses, especially ones built in the country if you have the windows open and one door closes it'll create a draft. That's why the door to the bedroom closed when the front door did. It was a brilliant stylistic choice, knowing that Bill and Frank are dead inside there, it was almost as if it were Bill and Frank saying, "No, Joel. You don't want to see this." Fucking BRILLIANT. I could write a paper on this episode alone.
