Alright so The Last Of Us comes with an ending that I think will stick with everyone long after they experience it. Whether you watched the events play out in the game or show I think that it leaves a lasting impression due to the situation that the two protagonists find themselves in.
Towards the end of the story Joel finally reaches the fireflies with Ellie but he discovers that in order to make a vaccine that Ellie has to die. Joel is someone who lost his daughter and rather than going through the pain of this again he decides to murder all of the fireflies and take her back to his brother in Jackson.
Joel lies to her about what really happened and he makes Ellie believe that everything was all for nothing.
Well not for nothing as he now has a surrogate daughter and she has the father figure that she’s always wanted in her life. He tells her in the show that raiders arrived at the hospital and though he leaves out this detail in the game he makes her believe that they’ve given up on finding a cure.
The game and show close out on the exact same scene with Ellie asking Joel to swear that everything he’s said is true.

Now, was Joel right or wrong?
Well firstly I think we have to discuss the two sides of the argument and how Marlene and Joel are actually pretty similar.
Both were tasked with guarding Ellie and they made a promise to protect her. Both knew that she was immune and both were told that there was a way to manufacture a cure from her.

People took the world from joel, it was only fair that he do the same in return by preventing a potential cure.

HE WAS WRONG! Regardless of the small chance they had to make a “cure” like substance he prolonged the suffering of other due to his own trauma and love for Ellie, making decisions that sealed his fate later on. Just because your the main character doesn’t mean you miss out on the consequences of your actions like what. As mana people as he’s killed did you really think no one would hold a grudge?
I think the Fireflies created this situation. They could've explained it fully to Ellie, and if she agreed knowing she would die, then so be it. Or they should've kept Joel knocked out, and when he woke up, tell him Ellie died during surgery.
This is a great question. Here's the answer: the doctor is a quack. Ellie would have died and the quack would have been no closer to a cure. The proper course of action would be to see how many babies that Ellie could crank out and how many of them inherited the immunity.
I think you missed the point of a cure or vaccine was not guaranteed… the second episode the most prolific doctor of the coredcepts said the only way was to burn it. But a surviving doctor … or a doctor created in the pandemic could create it … doubtful… Joel was not willing to kill a child for a long shot …
Joel did what any parent would do.
That said, Ias someone who is on the side of the greater good, Joel did the right thing. ONLY BECAUSE (and this might be due to bad writting/showing on the shows/games end) there was NO guarantee there is a cure. Joel is being asked give up is faux daughter for a 'maybe'. How many parents would give away their child for a maybe? There needs to be more extensive testing and trials for me to give up a child. If you can show me this is the greater good, im all in. You show me proof…
The neurosurgeon would only be the first medical professional that would have been in the process. You'd need other specialists to study and develop the tissue samples, you'd need different specialists to create the vaccine (and THAT would be a "what if" as well).
Also, why didn't the Fireflies present Ellie the choice so she could decide herself rather than immediately knock her out and prepare her for death.
It was a selfish thing that he did but change for the better for everyone involved i just "wish" nothing happened badly to him next season this show
Moral of the Story: Love makes you irrational.
He was absolutely wrong. I lost a daughter to a kidnapper who destroyed not only my child but the lives of everyone intertwined in any way, but would I demolish the hopes of all of humanity to change that? No. Bc while I'm a very loving and broken hearted father, I'm also not a p.o.s who would doom others for my own personal gain
I just wish they did a one shot with Joel at the end. Where he’s killing everyone and you can hear them yell to each other and you see then beg for their lives but he just kills them. No music, just shots and yells and cries.
The fireflys fucked up by not having Joel restrained until the operation was done. Marlene says what a badass he is and then lets him go. What did she think he would do?
to put it simple it was wrong but let's be real most of us would have done the same thing so ya just gotta pick a side
From the show it seems much more like killing her, might point, to what might be an immunization, a theory on theory, and not a cure at all. The children of current humans, might have a possible immunization breaks down to me come up with a lot more data before destroying a person in order to have a possibility of a possibility. Also, in the video version of this story, Ellie does not seem so much a child as you are implying. By her world she is or is nearly adult.
Joel was wrong for stopping the cure for the world but you tell any Dad you’re gonna kill his kid to get it and you’ll get the same outcome.

Only thing that was wrong is the Firefly's not telling Elli they have to kill her to get a shot at the cure and not giving Joel and Elli the chance to say good bye to each other.

also, couldn't they have just taken a chunk of her mushroom and grew that? instead of taking the whole brain? also also, marlene knew how ellie was made, she couldve been trying to recreate that the last 20 years
