The Last of Us Day is a yearly chance for us here at Naughty Dog to celebrate The Last of Us franchise and the incredible community that has supported it. As we hit The Last of Us’ 10th anniversary this year, Naughty Dog took TLOU Day 2023 to highlight some of the recent activations we have had around the series, some of the new merch offerings and collaborations we have available for fans this year, and a concert performance recorded last year that we’re showing to the public for the first time from The Last of Us’ very own Joel, Troy Baker.
As we focus The Last of Us Day around celebrating and honoring the decade of this franchise and our fans’ support, we are using the day to look back on the last 10 years and are not currently discussing any studio projects. PSA: Naughty Dog is in dire straits.
So Factions 2 has been cancelled internally. Bungie, who Sony acquired explicitly to run an audit on progress on multiplayer projects, took one look at Factions 2 and showed it cost more time and money to make than GTA 5, and nothing to show for it.
TLOU3 is severely hampered. There's gross mismanagement going on to where at least one GDD has been totally scrapped and Neil's still making constant revisions instead of starting all over, and the things he IS keeping are obvious retcons and first-draft nonsense. And that's when he is in the office, he's single-handedly halting production because he wants to work on the TV show so he can make his big break into screenwriting. Yeah, Neil, that'll happen, a failed comic artist, failed game designer, it was always just the medium failing you.
Speaking of the show, Season 2 has been hampered by the WGA/SAG strikes, but don't expect it to salvage what the original part 2 was. They're going to double-down super hard on "Abby's the best person ever, ditch the original characters." There was a base jumping scene with Abby originally planned, y'know, to show how cool she is. Genius writing.
Maybe they're not working on The Last of Us though, you think? Nah, Sony ain't funding that. They barely trust Naughty Dog to work on another remaster, since the latest remaster didn't make it's budget back and was a multi-million dollar failure.

I mean they are making the last of us part 3 major filiming happening this year, their also making the multiplayer game and possibly working on the last of us 2 directors cut. So i get it. They busy cooking up this massive filet mignon

Naughty Dog, every member of your team does outstanding work and you should absolutely be proud of how much the last of us franchise has grown. As a long-standing fan of Factions, I wanted to address the toxic comments you have no doubt noticed over the last few months in particular and on behalf of those fans, I sincerely apologize. As your storytelling in part two craftfully took us on a journey where we didn’t just get to witness but experience that Love brings with it a capacity for endearing compassion or despair through tragic decision. Putting together the story such as it is was a monumental achievement in the medium.
I love playing factions, but in its current state it is quickly becoming unplayable – people abuse mechanics and shoot through walls. Please disregard the negativity and continue being awesome. I will patiently (and eagerly) await news that’ll bring me some Hope as a factions fan ❤

I come from the future. HBO's The Last of Us will get cancelled after the first part of Season 2 airs.
Factions on launch and months after will remain a glitchy game with microtransactions and a pay to win model.
Sony ends up firing the main Naughty Dog studio executives and a new Part 2 will be made altering the events of the one that exists.
