  1. I had a friend whose daughter met and married a guy from East Berlin. He had escaped in 1988. At that time if you were a guard and saw a person trying to escape without stopping it, you could be shot instead. If he had waited a year, he could’ve just walked out. He said it was worth it.

  2. It is worth noting that all sides were up to no good. It is pretty certain (No actual prosecutions took place) that America used human derived growth hormone extensively into the 80s where a test for it became available. One of the doctors associated with this then moved to Jamaica…
The cycling blood doping scandal of the early 2000s used a lab in Spain, when the police raided the lab 3/4 of the blood samples there were not of cyclists…

  3. I remember a classic cover of National Lampoon around the time of the 1980 Olympics. It showed a female Russian track athlete. As you scanned her body down, she had a large pair of testicles and penis. Hilarious and absolutely classic.πŸ˜‚

  4. The communists did this in a futile attempt to prove their societies were normal: "look, we win at all these sports." We in the West just laughed at them and their waiting ten years to buy a crappy car, their lousy cramped living spaces, crummy food, theft of state property, pretending to work, inability to travel, etc. And of course their sinister specialty, the Gulag.

  5. It certainly not good, we began doping, probably age 16? Some 15 in my high school. This was in the '90s, our coach was very competitive. It was actually not hard to find steroids, many of them came from Mexico and various European countries where they were over the counter. All of my friends who are in these programs and myself are on low dose testosterone now that we are older. The reason why is our bodies shut down. They stopped what would be considered a normal level of hormone production but the crazy part is it didn't happen until many years after. There's even a clinical term for called anabolic steroid induced hypogonadism

  6. Eastern Bloc female gymnasts did not dope. Coaches simply lied about their athletes' ages and brought them into international competition at illegally young ages. It's why they always looked so much smaller than Western gymnasts.

  8. The lack of understanding your avg joe has for athletics and PED use is astounding. Regardless of what nation we are talking about, steroids are a core component of every sport at almost every level.

  9. i think the big danger is in thinking such things only ever happen elsewhere. sure, the systematic, state-sponsored approach of the GDR and now (or at various times?) Russia is a significantly bolder move, but it seems so easy and way too tempting to assume that cases in Western Europe or America are always just exceptions. really though they might as well just be company-sponsored instead of state-sponsored, and/or the respective state tacitly accepts it, or in the worst case that state is just much better at hiding it (though to be fair, in that case they are probably also smart enough to restrict it to a smaller scale and higher age of the athlete in order to make it easier to hide.. so maybe not out of ethical considerations, just practical ones).
the IOC's conduct is a good example of how too much of this is still accepted.

  10. Every country was doping… and guess what, they still are. AAS tests are easy to pass if you understand the basic chemistry of them. Just use one with a short ester. Trenbalone Acitate half life is 4 days. 5 half lifes to clear your system. So after 20 days it's non detectable and you are still as strong as you were 20 days ago. Gains don't vanish that fast. If you think Bolt wasn't jucied to the max, you are nieve.

  11. They did in the west as well. Arie Haan, former Dutch pro footballer said the both the Dutch national team as well as his regular teams Standard & Anderlecht played every game high on amphetamines. Holland played those finales in 74 & 78 doped up.

And most others teams did it as well. West-Germany was just as doped

And in lower leagues they still do. I know because I did and so does half the team. The older guys at least. When you're 37 you can do it without the dope at sunday league

Everybody was doped before the 80s, then the tests came and better training and food
