An important thing to take from this war is that 'Soviet' does not mean 'Russian'. The people who suffered the most from the German invasion were the Ukrainians, Belarussians, ethnic Poles, and Baltic peoples. They had also suffered at the hands of the Soviets during Stalin's man-made famine. This part of the world was an absolute blood bath since the start of the Russian revolution, until Stalin snuffed it in 1953.
