I've never completely understood why nations stockpile so many nuclear missiles. I get that you want some overstock to prevent being disarmed in the event of an effective first strike situation, but past that whether you have a hundred or a thousand makes very little difference since any situation where you fire off your complete arsenal means everyone, including you, is about to die. Whether it happens in a microsecond or you manage to grimly soldier on for a year or two in a nuclear winter doesn't make a hell of a lot of difference; any full-scale nuclear war is pretty much an extinction event. Even if by some miracle a small number of humans manage to carry on the world would be smashed, both poisoned by radiation and with most of its resources depleted, so there wouldn't be any advanced society rising from the ashes. Just small city-states clinging to life in the handful of habitable zones until some other cause comes along and wipes those out too.

You know, the human population has this whole thing where "we can't play God" and create these horrible things, but when you think about nukes and their destructive power, one starts to realize that we practically are gods in our infancy, yet we are ones who have not yet realized it. We have godlike power to destroy entire landmasses. We have to use that power wisely. So far, no national leader seems like they're doing so
