Great movie
I love this story’s themes about found family. Three people who are all dealing with loneliness, albeit for different reasons. Mary losing her son and working through that grief, Angus essentially being abandoned by his mom and losing his dad in a different way, and and Paul slowly breaking down the walls he put up after the whole world pretty much ostracized him. They all grew and changed as they found a bond in each other.
This movie shows you don’t need fancy sets and spectacular costumes and special effects to make a great movie. You just need a great story and layered characters.
I also think this film epitomizes the saying that people come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. While Angus, Paul, and Mary went their separate ways, they changed each other’s lives for the rest of them. Mary was able to heal or at least move forward after her devastating loss, Angus got to stay at the school and tap into his potential, and Paul was finally free to live the life he truly wanted for himself.
Yeah I watched this last year and was thinking it was going to be like an all boy version of the Breakfast Club at first, then they ditched all but one of the kids and it turned into something even greater, crazy good perfomances even from Dominic Sessa in his first screen role. Love this reaction, thank you. ❤
I want to recommend another great Giamatti performance – Sideways. Fantastic movie!

You can't go wrong with Alexander Payne; and you can't go wrong with Paul Giamatti. Some other great Payne movies: Election, About Schmidt, and Sideways.
to be honest, you needed the whole month to be just Christmas movies. I hope next year you do that
I love this movie, the curmudgeon just changing his stripes, taking them out, relearning his humanity again. That little christmas before the trip is the change point. He was always a good dude, but strict, and learns to care about his students the way he does his coworkers. The scene where he rips into the douche kid over besmirching the chef and her son…..

The question I had at the end of this film was "How do we actually know that Angus' dad is actually suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and early-onset dementia?" With that ex-wife, maybe somebody actually is putting something in his food, and more.
Turns everything to gold. I recommend him in The Illusionist with Edward Norton. He plays a very cunning detective who matches his meet.
This was a very underrated movie, filled with heart and amazing performances. ❤Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Daniel and Sam.
