The Heraclians Against All Odds (Eastern Rome Summarized IX)

Herakleios is dead. The man who saved the Roman Empire from Persia left his successors a state no less devastated than during the 610s. Is it the end of the Empire? No. Following a year of political uncertainty, the grandson of Herakleios, Konstas II, took up the reins of government at only 10 years old and surprisingly paved the way for the Empire’s survival. His son and grandson followed his example and continued the struggle against the Caliphate. Sadly, the grandson of Konstas, Justinian II, brought his own downfall by being overly despotic at times and started an anarchic two decades of political instability. The Romans were so distracted that the Arabs advanced all the way to Constantinople’s doorstep…

Sorry if this seems like a cliffhanger but this is where season 1 of Eastern Rome Summarized ends. Season 2 will be back soon, but I need a small break from producing these vids non stop. Hope you understand. However, I do have a special vid coming up so I won’t be absent for too long!

Music used in the video:
Christodoulos Halaris – A widow’s son is ill
Capella Romana – Kontakion of the Mother of God (Mode Plagal IV)
Christodoulos Halaris – Kai Allos Tou Aftou, Fthorikos Diapason Kai

Thanks so much for watching!

  1. A quick comment on the quality of the video:
So yes I finally augmented the video audio, yay, but you might notice that there are several points where the video and audio fail to sync. That happened a bit when I first started making these videos, but since then I have solved the problem with my video editor, or at least I thought so. I struggled with the syncing problem on this video for a few days but in the end it just got way too frustrating, so I gave up. Sorry if this seems I don't care about my own videos, but that's not the case. I just have a limit for my patience. But I will find a new video editor for the next video.

  3. Awesome video!! Although you missed out on some interesting details like Constans II's diplomatic mission to China in 643 and also the unknown fact that Constans II had a twin brother that he mutilated. You also didn't really explain the theory of why Constans was killed. Anyway, you can mention Byzantium and China's relations next time when discussing the era of Michael VII and Alexios I. On the other hand, you surely true enough became Unbiased History's successor!

  4. Your series inspire to think over and over again to create one day illustrated book that would narrated life and rule of Emperors in Justinianic Dynasty, starting the story with reign of Anastasius and ending it with Maurice tragic end.My concept is to do something like Suetonius The Twelve Caesars but with emperors of this period. As Suetonius I would also included semi-historical episodes and legends connected with these emperors whom I think people might find amusing too.All Emperors would had its own chapter except Justinian who would be given 3:rise-decline-and demise,as his reign is far better recorded in detail than of those others(as you surely know 🙂 ).All the best.

  5. Oh, the three stooges of Philippikos, Artemios and Theodosios the Taxman never cease to entertain me. Thank heavens, Leon III steps in next (Isaurian dynasty all the way 👯‍♀️) 😆

    Great vid!

  6. I love your videos but sometimes I think you speak just a bit too fast. Also, sometimes you dont keep the picture on the screen long enough for me to read the caption. Come on, you worked so hard on the art portion, I want to appreciate it properly without having to pause.
