Function over form, 100% of the time. If a shit painted rotten sausage works better than a beautiful glass and LCD PC, the only question is: "should I build two or three rotten sausages?"
Now, if You want to talk cost/benefit… then it gets complicated.
After thirty plus years of dedicated obsession over trying to make my PC faster I've decided that the money you spend on a computer is better spent on what you see on the screen rather than what you see in the box that puts the picture on the screen.
on a budget function is 100 times more important than your look. if you don't have a budget then have fun.

I am planning a new PC Build. I have never built a system with AMD… but I am afraid to build with an Intel I9 14900K and have problems. I use the system for business apps 98% of time. Very light gaming but I could easily do with gaming. So a real high end video card is not a must.
I want to build a great quality PC for the next 10 years of use. What would you recommend? I am now Waiting for the 2025 CPU's!
I have an old-school server supertower which means I don't see my parts. At the same price I'll still take an RGB over non-RGB part but I'll never pay more and I'll never accept a performance loss.
Not only do I not use an AIO, I just use an AMD Wraith Prism air cooler that I got for free and it works just fine on my R7-5800X3D. The side benefit is that it's probably the most beautiful air cooler ever made.
water-cooling is about function. it doesn't have to be about speed, it can be about noise not just speed or temps.to get a given noise profile with just air-cooling is more difficult than using custom liquid cooling particularly with regards to the gpu. I get that there are amazing aftermarket heatsinks for cpus but not for gpus. if you want to manage temperatures and noise on a gpu, you can't just buy a replacement heatsink. oh, and games are not the only things that pcs are used for. so there are programs that will push a gpu far harder than any game and temps can then climb to levels that force the factory fans to levels that are too loud.
Maybe it's not as important to have a sick RGB case or 360 AIO if you have an Intel Celeron 2 core 2 thread Processor and a GT 1030. Just maybe.
Function always over form. I wish i could order parts without paying for garbage RGB that I'll literally never even plug in.
re: the watercooling thing. It's not necessarily form vs function, ie there are practical reasons to use say, an AIO, other than cooling performance or just looking cool. AIOs can mount in a number of different ways and are just basically required for some case form factors. Also, if you're planning on moving your PC with any frequency, an AIO can usually be mounted more securely than a large tower. In other words, do you even LAN party? Also, if you know you're going to want/need an AIO eventually, it can make sense to just buy out of the gate rather than an air cooler you might never use again (your AIO will probably work with whatever you upgrade to). All that said, from a pure $/perf perspective, Paul's probably right. You're not wrong Paul you're just…too used to building PCs out of random bits for other people! 😜

As for water kooling, it's very much the owners preference. There is no right answer. I've done both many times.

Paul, how about showing how to upgrade a NVMe boot drive, 1 TB to 4 TB, with the point being to remove the 1 TB from service (think use warning on old SSD)?
@Paul's Hardware: If you read this. There are far more reasons for liquid/water cooling (sans RGB puke), such as maintaining stable temps, especially in a warmer climate.
Air cooling has its place; water cooling is sometimes about something other than looking cool. In fact, function (heat efficiency – moving heat quickly away from hot components) and, say, keeping stable over blocks on lower-end hardware that will produce more heat when overclocked.
I am an old-school water cooler since the mid-00s. I have custom looped every one of my builds, especially during the summer, only sometimes having AC (central or window), living in warm(er) climates, or such that lower noise levels. (I still use soft tubing as I don't care for rigid tubing. X-D)
These are just a few reasons. So, just telling people NOT to water cool just because of $ the hardware level is selling the subject short and arguably in a biased (arguably uninformed/inexperienced) context.
More expensive hardware (higher CPUs/GPUs) almost always guarantee more power draw = greater heat dump into the room.
Upgrading hardware is not always the best choice.
Again, I am not arguing the cool (appearance) factor, and I don't care for "the look" vs the efficiency of cooling for the the above reasons.
Stable temps > RGB factor.
Stable temps + overclocking.
Quieter performance > Loud fans.
While I agree that the RPG puke is obnoxious, I'll build a water-cooled PC over an air-cooled one almost daily.
I suggest re-thing your perspective.

if you have money to spend pimp that pc up. If not then I hope most people would prefer looking at 200fps instead of a rgb box with 150fps. Everytime I see a nice looking build with a glass case and rgb lighting up the components I think ¨oh that looks awesome¨ but then realise that I would just turn off the rgb whenever I play games or watch movies lol.
I think having a really clean build where it's easy to maintain and switch parts with good cable managedment falls into both functionality and aesthetic. On a tight budget always go for performance though.
I definitely bounce between function and form. I think I start with “make it all work” and then over time end up at “it works and now I can tinker with it”. Granted all my rigs so far have started with second hand parts that I have to make functional in odd ways so 🤷🏼♂️.

Both are 100% doable. But today's 'engineers' wanted to be fashion designers and the field is so watered down there is no crossover between engineering and design. Designers just keep telling the engineers looks sell, while the market says stop puking on me.
Frankly, if you have more than one rgb device in your system your a tacky looser.
My question: why are we still stuck at 4 or 8TB maximum SSDs for consumers for multiple years now?
I mean, enterprise SSDs have moved far beyond those capacities, well into the 128TB.

Glossy finishes to increase contrast isn't really necessary for OLED because it inherently has a very high contrast ratio already.
Hi Paul, I have an old SSD (WD SN850X) that already came preinstalled with its own heatsink and planning to repurpose inside my PC. Only issue is, the heatsink needs to be removed and there is no sticker on the ssd itself if I want to install it in my PC since my mATX motherboard comes with its own ssd "shield"
Is it still an issue if the bare m.2 itself can still potentially thermal throttle since the "sticker" isnt there to thermally assist?
