The Gurdjieff Work with Kathleen Speeth

This video is a special release from the original Thinking Allowed series that ran on public television from 1986 until 2002. It was recorded in about 1988.

The average human is functioning in an unawakened state, according to Russian philosopher and mystic George Ivanovich Gurdjieff. Psychologist Kathleen Speeth, Ph.D., author of The Gurdjieff Work and Gurdjieff: Seeker of the Truth, was raised by parents who were students of Gurdjieff, whom she met as a child. She discusses the history and present status of the Gurdjieff movement and the fundamental exercise of “remembering oneself.”

  2. Many I's comes from the Philosophers Kierkegaard, Philip Mainlander, Nietzsche, the Psychic Researchers Edmund Gurney, Henry Sidgwick, Frederick Meyers, William McDougall, William James (also a Philosopher & Psychologist), the Psychotherapist Jung (semi-automatic complexes), Proto Many I's can be found in Plato's ship of state/ fools & allegory of the cave, the Bible's Tower of Babel, Persus & Medusa, Thomas Hobbs "Leviathan", Hume's aggregate self, Hinduism's Chakras & Koshas, Astrology's Planetary influences.

    The Fourth Way most likely came from Papus after Antoine Fabre d'Olivet, the former who talked about the intellectual, emotional & instinctive factories of the human machine, maybe also Turiya "The Fourth". Idries Shah stated that the Naqshbandis Sufis called their system "The Fourth Way", maybe, but I regard him as being unreliable. The three combined also occur in Plato's Harmonius Beehive & Chariot, likewise in the Mother letters of the Sepher Yezirah, & Abraham Abulafia practical techniques based on that text & the works of Robert Fludd such as "Threefold Man".

  3. Self-remembering = Being aware of being aware.

    We transform our temporal caterpillar psyche into an Eternal Butterfly Soul by alchemically integrating our Heart, Mind and Will.

    When the Heart aspires, the Mind inquires and the Will conspires (combines).

    Mind = Inspiration
    Heart = Aspiration
    Will = Volition

    Integration = Integrity.

  5. Her description of meeting Gurdjieff thrilled me. Now I'm eager for Jeffrey to interview Gary Lachman, who recently completed his book about Maurice Nicoll, author of the Fourth Way Psychological Commentaries.

  8. This speaker seems to lack specifics as to the teachings she talks about… Seems common among new age types to claim there is something "wrong" with people but only through their secretive, esoteric knowledge can they be "right" …

  9. I recently started reading 'In Search of the Miraculous' when synchronistically I get a notification that you (one of my favorite presenters of truth) posts this interview! Dr. Speeth was delightful. Thank you for all of your work, Jeffrey. It's always received perfectly, right on time!!! 🙏🙏

  10. So great to see people talking about the plurality of self back in the 80s. Robert Anton Wilson talked about it in Cosmic Trigger, too. Internal Family Systems therapy also engages with this material really well. Exciting stuff! Thank you for uploading
