In the early hours of a sultry Sunday morning, Fidel Lopez took a cigarette break. There was a balmy breeze and above him, just a sliver of a crescent moon, a night like many September nights in southern Florida at the height of hurricane season. Fidel relaxed from what he had just done, he drank in the night air and cleared his head.
Inside the new apartment, just past the broken sliding glass door, his 31 year-old girlfriend lay in a pool of her own blood, dead or dying. He finished his cigarette and steeled his nerves to make a call to 911.
