The Great Mop Up – drying out Thailand after the floods – Sept 21

Itโ€™s been a wet 10 days or so, in many parts of Thailand. Itโ€™s also the typhoon season for the north pacific and much of the rain and storms is a side effect of the typhoons as they sweep through the South China Sea and then track into Thailand, sucking in moisture from the Indian Ocean across the country. Today we look at the many efforts to mop up the mess.

Tim Newton Today is daily news commentary about Thai and the region, including issues of interest to expats and travellers to Thailand.

Perhaps the Thai Govt should look at the Philippines visa system. Like one or 2 months for visa-exempt and then a fee of up to $50 for each month's extension. After 1 month you can extend for 1/2/4/ or 6 months for a fee up to 3 years when you must do a boarder run. If you prefer you can get permanent residency by putting in a Filippino Bank US of $10,000 and a few minor conditions and you really can stay forever and maybe pay some taxes. I suggest $ 50 P/M for a visa extension may be accepted. Expats can also pay for the Philippines Govt medical coverage at a mostly low insurance fee. Mostly restrictions of overstay, work permits, health insurance etc. may be mandatory after 6 months or similar. After being a resident for 6 months then being a resident for taxation. This would make great simplicity with long-term persons retired and living in Thailand and reduce some of the ministry requirements. And give better desire for tourists to enter the country to holiday.

  2. QUESTION: Tim, did you ever do a video telling the whole story about that property you leased to improve and open, that may had been a hotel at one time? The deal didn't quite work out and you moved on. My wife was wondering if you ever told the whole story. A link would be nice if the story exists.

  7. For rental through an agent it is usual for 1 month rent as the agents fee. Getting bonds back is not easy, suggest write off 50%. It is a good idea to (as Tim suggests) to get a series of photos of any damage – wear and tear- and get the owner to agree. Get to know the owner

  9. I'm not a person who comments on shirts, but that one is one of your best ever, maybe THE best. Hokusai closeups. I notice a fold on your left side, so it means it's a brand new shirt. Funny, I notice this in films often when wardrobe didn't have enough time to steam all the folds out. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  10. Yes I always growl that way when talking about coups. ;-) No, I also don't think a coup is coming soon. It looks to me like a handshake was probably made to allow what's now happening. Srettha was not intended to be a long term PM. I mean, he had a meeting with Thaksin not long before he got disqualified. It would have been too obvious what they were up to if his daughter stepped right into the role. I wouldn't say "appetite" is the best word for Thais' feelings about coups, but more like "tolerance" for coups. Thais are remarkably acquiescent to them, or maybe intimidated. In this one, I think the establishment had to realize they'd gone as far as they could, needed to give in a bit, chose Thaksin as the lesser of two "evils" – god forbid the people should get to actually choose.
