THE FREMEN (Paul Atreides' Unstoppable Desert Warriors) DUNE EXPLAINED

Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained, and as requested, today we’re exploring the Fremen, as featured in Frank Herberts amazing Dune universe.

Originally known as the Free Men of Arrakis, The Fremen were a sub-culture of humans descended from the Zensunni Wanderers. They were hard in survival, adapted in the harsh environment of the planet and formed an integral part of the Muad’Dib’s Jihad launched by Paul Atreides.

I have covered the confusing history and trajectory of Paul Atreides in my video exploring Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, links in the description, but here I hope to show how instrumental the Fremen were to his rise to power.

First appearing in the 1965 novel Dune, they inhabit the desert planet Arrakis (also known as Dune), which is the sole known source in the universe of the all-important spice melange. Long overlooked by the rest of the Imperium and considered backward savages, in reality they were an extremely hardy people that exist in large numbers.

  2. I kept telling myself to finish reading the book which I left off at page 209 back in 1996, but realised I should probably start over to fully get my more adult brain's perspective, but yeah that didn't happen.

  3. Funny how Paul kills jamis even though Paul's vision shows jamis being his friend and showing him the way of the desert, jamis' hostility is the way he shows the ferocity of the desert and in killing him he shows Paul how it truly is in the desert.

  4. The thing about the Jihad is that Paul foresaw it via Spice-induced prescience and he wanted to prevent it, but could not. Even if he died, the Jihad would go on anyway.
Paul also foresaw the Golden Path, but flinched from it. Leto foresaw it and stepped onto it. Leto's death, Siona's invisibility from prescience, and the Scattering were all intended results.

  5. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! ….For adding the part about the winner of the duels being responsible for the wife and children of the loser. This was cut from both the Sci-Fi mini series and the David Lynch version and left as "cut content". And alot of people get confused as to the two boys standing next to Paul for the rest of the (David Lynch)movie, not realizing those are Jamis' sons and the lady the Saudaukar kill in the miniseries before killing Paul's first son is Jamis' wife, who was basically like a housekeeper to Paul and Chani!

  6. I used to live in the middle east as a child and there was an event where my family and others would go into the desert, a good two three hours deep and set up tents for night out, you don't know real peace until you smell the sand at night and hear the gentle wind, it's an almost clean smell and not a single car in range.
