The Foundations of the Deen – by Shehu Uthman Dan Fodiyo (Lesson #12)

The Foundations of the Deen – by Shehu Uthman Dan Fodiyo (Lesson #12)

The significance of this text can not be overstated! It was written by not only a scholar – but a West-African scholar. He was not only a scholar but he was considered by the scholars of his time to be the Mujaddid (Reviver) of the Age – the one foretold by Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) who will emerge in every generation. Not only that, but he also became a Khalifah (ruler). And he was a spiritual master who produced many disciples. He died in 1232h (1817 CE) before colonial rule reached his region. And he began many of his books with the following introduction:

“…Says the poor slave in need of the Mercy of his Lord – Uthman ibn Muhammad ibn Uthman – who is Fulaani by lineage, Maliki by madhhab and Ash’ari by creed…”

This blessed text gives us a snapshot of the Belief or ‘Aqeedah of the African Muslims before the invasion and colonization of the Europeans, their subsequent support of the Wahhaabi Creed and its ‘petrol-dollar financed’ import into Muslim lands and communities.
