How would humans develop a colony on Mars? A permanent Mars base, capable of sustaining human life independently, has been a goal of many futurists, scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs. But developing such a colony would be incredibly difficult. Today, we explore the implementation of this idea in detail.

  1. I love futuristic videos but this is too unrealistic. Mars is unforgiving. At best we will setup a small research base like The Martian, it's not going to be more than that

  2. So . . . they will be able to extract enough water to get Musk's first 420 on Mars? Cause I'm just sayin – that's the kind of face and attitude you just have to put a bunch of faith in.

A good effort 🙂 You do realize that Martian dust storms will often cover those solar panels? ;)The best initial source of power on Mars would be Nuclear Electric Thermal generators, and later on, fission reactors. Even on Earth "green" tech is dubious due to supply chain issues which boost expense and limit how many solar panels and batteries we can make, and primitive storage technology for intermittent solar and wind power, so how would "green" tech work on Mars reliably? 😉

    In addition, living in well-lit underground habitats beats surface domes as being far safer. By year 10 NO solar panels will be used on the surface for the colony, power WILL be nuclear 🙂 Solar might work as an orbital power station beaming it to a surface array as microwaves for the colony a ways off from the site 🙂 And of course the toxic Martian surface soil loaded with perchlorates will need scrubbing before compost can be added to grow crops 🙂

  4. Shouldn’t we try doing all this stuff on Antarctica and then just scale up to Mars? That way we’d have some sort of blueprint. And instead of being 36 months away at most times society there would only be 3-5 months away at most.

  5. Is this a SpaceX propaganda? This kind of timeline is pure fantasy. Make it 10 times longer, and maybe, maybe… but even then not sure. From technological point of view it is feasible, but financially and politically not at all.

  6. You failed to mention that it will ONLY be a one-way trip for the first hundred or so humans who land on Mars… There is NO infrastructure to manufacture fuel to get back for the first five to ten years on Mars. …or longer. We need to face this reality.

Every single thing, every single pane of glass, every tube of sealant, every single tiny nut and washer required to build these oversimplified and exaggerated things, like glass-domed habitats and underground vegetation labs, has to come from Earth. There is NO way, either financially, or logistically this will be possible within the first 10,000 days on Mars. Period. The costs are in the multiple-trillions for this. Those sizes of financial resources do not exist on the Earth now, or even in the near foreseeable future.

  8. The starship heading to mars will have to refuel first. Also the first one will be mostly cargo deploying and can launch ahead of the '29 window. they might not decide to land them but rather create mars orbiting station with them. Only reason they would be landing starship will be after they can refuel them or to scrap it for parts/materials.
    Also the biggest hazard on mars is radiation.
    Forget about anything being above ground that doesn't have to be there.

  9. I recall one time I was a secret agent on Mars. People were trying to kill me left and right. Now I don’t want to spoil it for you but in the end I defeated the bad guy, got the girl and saved the entire planet.

  10. It is extremely unlikely that this a relevant scenario. Pure fiction. Radiation is a big problem, the soil needs to be cleaned because it contains toxic salts and the second biggest problem is the low gravity. If you are not killed by cancer, brittle bones and weak muscles will kill you.
    Look at astronauts after a year in space, they are weak, it takes ages to make A recovery and they retain permanent damage.

  11. How come you couldn’t just say 27 yrs?.?… as if 10,000 days really seems that much less?.?… I can imagine.. the first thing that. Comes to a persons thought would be how many birthdays could I have in 10,000 days… do better guys..

  12. Sometimes we forgot that the origin purpose of travelling the stars was for the benefit of our own planet. The iss does extremely important research for how to help the help the rest of us. From materials science to medical tech the possiblitys are endless, space from the beginning isnt a place of hotels and casinos but a place for science, and that was what Nasa is still about today. But what do i know. Keep that in mind i guess next time you time you stare into the dark abyss and wonder for what purpose it brings.
