  2. From what I've heard the last name of the comic book artist Andrew brought up in the trivia, Bill Sienkiewicz, is pronounced something like Seen-Keh-Vich.

Tara called it, Illyana is indeed Russian, and she is also the younger sister of Colossus from the X-Men. Also, Rahne is supposed to be Irish IIRC, since there was a question about her accent as well.

I enjoy the film, and while it's true that there was places where things felt like they were missing and such, I'm not too hard on the film about it because I understand there was a lot of studio meddling and delays and such that caused it to end up the way that it did. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread as the saying goes, but for what it had to deal with to release and such I enjoyed it and have a solid respect for it.

  3. I think it was unfair that this got cast off. It would be lie to call it great but knowing they worked with in a lot of limitations and this was a passion project then observing how well they did with what they had. Obviously it ended up a performance piece. It's also based in something obscure which was an old painted New Mutants comic book about a Demon Bear. I read that as a child, I think I bought it from a flea market or dime bin? Anyway it was very haunting and they did a good job capturing the essence of that book which I can tell was the goal. So they achieved their objectives within limitations here in my opinion. Else it has Anya Taylor-Joy appeal for her fans. Lastly I can see this was another stepping stone because there are elements in this that are present in the rest of the final Fox X-Men movies that simply panned out. But believing this would (Sinister) they also did fine meeting that mark. So on it's own merits I don't think it is bad. If anything it just suffers as most do by comparison to it's own franchises zeniths which I always consider to be an unfair metric to impose on a film.

  4. This movie is special to me because it was my first post pandemic theater adventure I went over to another state because they opened a week before mine and it felt so good to be back even if it wasn’t that good

  5. The New Mutants was originally going to be a Rated-R horror film after the success of Deadpool and Logan. It was going to start the next X-men phase with Essex Corp / Mr Sinister.
The Disney deal happened while New Mutants was filming. The Minister Sinister stuff was scrapped, a ton of reshoots happened and it was made PG-13.

  6. Yeah, nobody can pronounce Bill Sienkiewicz's (it's more or less pronounced syn-KEH-vich). His artwork in the original is legendary for being unsettling and disturbing and creating a sense of "something here is not right." And the Demon Bear was terrifying. The movie did its best to capture that, I felt, but it's a very high bar.

I thought this movie was not great, but okay. I really liked the chemistry between Dani and Rahne, and once the script stopped making Illyana be a damn racist I warmed up to her. It was great to finally see Lockheed the Dragon in a film. In the comics he's actually Kitty's pet (the girl who walks through walls), but she and Illyana were roommates back in the 80s so there is a connection.

A lot of reactors skip this movie. I get why, but I'm glad y'all watched it, and I had fun tagging along 🙂
