Much of what befell the Russian dynasty's demise can be placed on the fact that they didn't have any good successors after Alexander the second (I think). Many of their future monarchs were either vastly unprepared for the role, unable to take command, and too easily influenced by court politics. Nicholas only got the throne cus his older brother who would of been a better candidate died. He could of tried to focus more on the people as well as fix the politics of the court for his family future, but not once has he even thought of that being a possibility. While we wish the children could of been spare cus they were innocent, an heir is an heir. The fact they carry the blood of their parents made them a target from birth, and had the Soviet union planned to perserve the lineage, the kids would of lived.
Alexi would probably eventually die from his condition, but his sisters would of found husbands and make more heirs had they lived

Yes the execution was horribly botched though atleast Nicholas and Alexandra died pretty quickly. Which cannot be said for their unfortunate children. Alexandra was a terribly unfit empress and Nicholas a stubborn autocrat ruler in a world begging for reforms. And what should have been the hightlight of their lives..the birth of a male heir turned into the biggest tragedy when they found out he had hemophilia which was back then , basically an early death sentence ( though the poor kid still died for his time) I will always wonder if Nicholas was told about the disease beforehand.
The daughters were not Princesses, the were Grand Duchesses. The rank of Princess was below that of Grand Duchess. Sons, except for the Tsarevich, were Grand Dukes, not Princes.
I think the correct pronunciation is closer to "Aleeks" then "Alex" like we say in English.
