    “The Avatar is back!”
I can’t be the only one that thinks this line was put in simply because they thought it sounded cool for the trailers, right?

If you thought that was bad, wait until you hear about the time at AWA (Anime Weekend Atlanta) where her & Dante Basco held a panel there, when someone asked "If you went on a life-changing adventure with Zuko, what do you expect to happen?", Grey DeLisle, in character as Azula, answered with "I would get pregnant". Don't believe me, here's proof: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRCF1KDfj-8

  2. A great start to a great season, especially with Zuko's character arc reaching it's peak. Everything leading up to the invasion with Zuko trying to re-integrate himself at home with his family (and failing), and the shift after the invasion with Zuko integrating himself into the Gaang (and succeeding) is amazing.

  3. 4:48 I only just realized this and i could be wrong but i think they are all wearing masks because they use the "stink-and-sink" mines hakoda invented. And he described them as foul-smelling.

  4. 12:21 That is not a weird thing, The Guru helped Aang connect with his past lives in the meditation.
Being able to access the Avatar state isn't just for fighting, it's all the knowledge and wisdom of the past as well…
So after the training it makes sense why he didnt need to follow any special rules to make it easier

  5. Trivia time, this episode first aired right after the Bending Battle chili special. These specials weren’t canon and just served as cute chili style shorts but it’s just really jarring to have something so cute and happy only to follow up with a serious war drama where our hero literally talks about being brought back to life with a huge wound on his back. A special edition of this episode confirms that Air Nomads shave their heads to feel the air better and shaving it is a daily routine, which explains Aang growing it during his coma. This is the last time we see Earth King Kuei until his return in The Promise where he is a major character founding the Harmony Restoration Movement, I won’t explain how yet as there’s a future video series on The Promise trilogy.

  6. 12:28 I don't think that this is weird. Aang was already spiritually strong. I always felt that the more he mastered the four elements, the closer he would become with his past lives. So far he was practical with air, water and earth. Since the final book also addressed him finally fire bending, it wouldn't be until he practiced with that, that he could reach out fully to his past lives.

  7. We have a 2 parter today. Yayyyyy comment making struggles.

I…love this episode. It just swings SO HARD at you. The consequences, the drama, the love in EVERY scene. This is another episode I feel is actually underrated. (Not very much but underrated nonetheless.) I think this episode belongs in my top 10. If not, it’s top 5.

The slow build of the stolen ship is SO cool. You can put it together pretty fast the more questions you ask yourself why he’s held the way he is.

The masks on the boat actually make perfect sense. Remember what Hakoda and Sokka worked on together in the Guru? The stink and sink. A mine that forces the crew to abandon ship because the smell is so bad. So the masks are for the operations of stealing ships by blotting out the smells. (I don’t know when people figured out gas masks, and I’m all but certain it wasn’t in such an early era, but I give a pass to Hakoda being an absolute genius.

But also the absolute RELIEF that everyone is fine. Katara EASILY the most excited he’s on his feet again. More to the point they all knew he’d pull through, but she was the closest to the circumstances of his fall at Ba Sing Se and knew he had to be priority one the MOMENT he woke up.

The battle was DEFINITELY a big upgrade for the crew who basically understood now that Aang was so far down with his injury they would likely have to fill the gaps by taking place. (Katara DOES do big moves like this later, but I guess the Southern Raiders is meant to be when she’s at her most powerful considering the circumstances.) I’ll also point out that Toph DOES feel things with vibrations, and she CAN sense earth in the air, but those freaking fire catapults ARE NOT QUIET. And many blind people use their sense of hearing as their primary sense. For Toph it’s her sense of touch, but all 4 of her senses should be heightened to compensate for her being blind. Also she clearly has been practicing the CRAP out of metal bending. But she’s actually doing less damage than you think when she busts down the bridge. She only has to crumble the bridge SLIGHTLY to knock it into the water. And I think they put the rocks in a place where she’d have the best straight shot of the opposing ship. Though I’m also not gonna lie that launching at the Serpent WAS stupid.

Bringing up the storm is absolutely perfect. They do this a few more times throughout the show. Having Zuko and Aang parallel each other on such a deeper level. Zuko runs away from his problems a bit more this episode while Aang runs into them head on with absolute reckless abandon even if it’s NOT AT ALL smart to do. I could HEAR Iroh shouting at Zuko when Aang ran. AND THEN WHAT?! YOU HAD HIM, THEN YOU HAD NOWHERE TO GO!

I do believe May and Zuko are a good couple. She takes some time but as things go on she tries harder to know him on a deeper wavelength as their relationship progresses. (And it takes her a WHILE to see how emotionally inept he is and how he thinks. So much to the point that we don’t have full resolution how things went for them even in book 4 and 5. Emphasis on the word full) We’ll go into deeper detail later. Right now she’s just REALLY happy to see Zuko again and Zuko…is everywhere right now.

I do think Azula was of two minds here. She saw herself that Aang got shot in the spinal chord. So even though there was doubt, she knew SHE had nothing to truly be concerned with. That’s a permanent injury that’ll likely effect him for the rest of his life. But I really do think she DID give this to Zuko in some care out of him. Less so a way to rip the home he just got back and more so a way of saying, if you’re so stressed about him being alive, let me put this in YOUR court so you can solve your problem. She truly didn’t care if Aang was alive or dead because she could earn victory in other ways. (Which she still has the info of the Day of Black Sun up her sleeve with preparations already starting for that.) Azula and Zuko in this early part of the season are VERY complicated because they DO actually seem to care for each other as siblings…it’s just that their family methods are…BEYOND messed up.

I’m gonna make a part 2. YouTube be fighting today.

  8. 11:52 So I guess now is a wonderful time to say this, but one of the first pieces of rule 34 I ever encountered was if this scene played out as insinuated. Now I know where the person who drew that comic probably got enough of a point of motivation from.
14:54 You…you are aware that the turtles are named after actual Renaissance painters right? Please tell me that that's a joke that anyone else would obviously take as a joke but because it's, well, you, I'm not so sure?

  9. Consider this a part 2.

Mark Hamill I STILL can’t believe is Ozai. I NEVER knew until a few years ago my animated Joker, Luke Skywalker, and Ozai were all the same guy. I know so many already love that man as probably one of if not their ABSOLUTE favorite actor/VA because of this, but my respect went through the ROOF only recently. Ozai is written as a psychopath. He NEVER wavers beyond how “useful” people are. And it HAUNTS me as he talks about how his son has redeemed himself enough to live HOME. I can officially say I can look at you again because you fought well. And Zuko is SO restrained without Iroh. Or more accurately without people he fully trusts. He can’t be himself. It’s a show.

Though now the time has come to talk about a scene I consider in my top THREE scenes of the show. Katara and Hakoda. This scene is SPECTACULAR. EVERYONE remembers this scene down to the FIBER because it’s such a strong scene. I know how the rest of the season goes, but this is the MOMENT that any crush she has develops into real love. (One could also argue late book 2 at the Earth Palace but I think that’s still a growing crush.) She NEEDS Aang in her life and she knows he needs them and SPECIFICALLY her. But to make it so double meaning with her love for her dad and how he left to go to war is absolutely perfect. I can’t get enough of how perfectly this scene just gets EVERY emotion. Hakoda reassuring Katara how much he loves her and even letting her go with Aang because he knows that Katara feels that’s where she’s needed most. (Which kinda also proves how much value he has for Katara to bring back the line “being a man is to go where you’re needed most”)

And of course there’s Aang essentially surrendering his responsibility for now to follow the invasion plan. has to put his duties of avatar a bit more off to the side now. And I can assume him using Neutral Jing like Bumi wanted was VERY hard for him to do because he understood all his options were exhausted. And this is the best chance he has.

This episode is HEAVY. This one as an adult is one that has changed SO MUCH. As a kid I was just sad and uncomfortable watching this episode. As an adult I balled my eyes out or felt literally seized up with fear as I understand SO much more of the depth. This is an episode I’m SO thankful I’m an empath for because the emotions are so on point.

  10. 14:54 Michelangelo was a historical figure widely considered to be the greatest artist of the renaissance, and arguably the greatest artist of all time. He did later have a turtle named after him.
