After sitting atop the fighter rankings for more than a quarter-century, the F-22 Raptor is now living on borrowed time. Today, a new fighter, being developed in the Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance Program, promises to usher in yet another revolution in air combat technology, as today’s F-22s fly off into the sunset.
But with at least a decade before the NGAD fleet will reach full strength, America is investing billions into keeping the F-22 as capable — and deadly – as ever.

By the end of the decade, Russia might have a full squadron of SU-57's.
5:21 It's interesting and odd that the firm Thales doesn't use the traditional English pronunciation of its own name ('T-h-a' > 'thay' like 'say' / 'l-e-s' > 'lees' like 'bees') in official marketing material, they say it like the Texas city of Dallas > Thalis – and then Alex pronounces it like a boat's sails > Thails. The ancient Greek philosopher Thales would be confused 🙂
The F-22 only had around 180 run! I think there are only around 130 left!😮
Can't wait for China to truly see how far behind they are in weapons technology should push comes to shove.
What do you think about the Chinese pl-17
Congress would rather squander $$ on the littoral class ships. There must be some serious graft involved.
What's going on with China's H-20 I saw an article about it recently
Stopping production of this jet was a huge mistake. We should have made about 400 of them and kept improving them.
We wouldn't need to be in much of a hurry to make a 6 gen, and it probably would have been cheaper in the long run.
The 6th gen should be based on the Raptor. It has the speed and maneuverability and still a great stealth capability.
What would this plane be like today if all the money and resources of the F35 had went into the Raptor? China would be shitting themselves right now.
Good health and God bless you.
Thank you for all you do for us, your fans!
Good on ya, Marine, for quoting Chesty. Semper Fi!
You had me at Chesty Puller. KC-130 mechanic. Cherry Point.
Alex, in this video, you state that IRST was fairly new when the F-22 Program was evaluating its planes requirements and omitted it. The F-14D Super Tomcat had IRST they could use to develop a weapons grade track on a target 200 miles away , and it was delivered in 1991. Sad that only now the F-35 is taking advantage of IRST, and not the F-22. Imagine if the USA had been developing the system continually since the late 80’s, when the F-14’s system was developed. The Super Hornet would have it, newer F-16’s would….and the current systems would be many decades ahead of where they now are. It’s like we forgot about it because we threw the F-14D out. Oh well. Maybe do a video on the Super Tomcat sometime, especially with the new info that’s come out about its capabilities. Some of the stories EMBARRASS the Super Hornet. Like having to turn back on missions in Iraq because they could not climb over weather, or not being super sonic with a fully bomb load where the ST was with a larger load.
Hey there! Love the content on this channel and suspect we’d get along great. Like minded, similar age, jarheads, defense industry, etc. So I’m not a troll. Much love. But I just have to tell you…I can’t stand the way you say “…and I’m Alex Collings” at the beginning of your videos. It cringes me out really bad. I know it’s like your signature move and I think that’s cool. But I personally always try and fast forward your intro so I can avoid it and I always seem to land on it. Anyway, I love the channel and will continue to support you! I just wanted to share.
Great video as always! Hope you are doing alright Alex!
Get well soon.😊
But Chinese jets are flown by Chinese pilots😂
Bravado wont help the raptor
1 China's engines are shaky, 2 China's aircraft carriers may be a huge joke
United States : the f22 is being retired.
Russia : yes! Now we attack!
United states: pyske
ATTENTION : F22 was canceled because it said an offensive joke back in early 2000s , that upset two Iranian fighter pilots "you should probably go home" .
link 16? no mention of
IRSTs aren't a new technology. The F101B Voodoo, F106 Delta Dart and F14 Tomact all had them.
Thales is pronounced as: Taalas
ah the classic, B-2 program that takes too long and uncle sam become impatient and B-1 were born. Now this happen to Raptor
When will Congressional bean counters ever realize that making a small number of something increases the unit cost and limits the service life of the weapon system?
The B-2 is another example of small group number weapon system.
Thank goodness we are upgrading them and designing a replacement for both.
The B-2 was really getting long in the tooth.
Americans seriously bragging about PS2 technology in 2024. 😂
Modern system can't be fitted internally on the F22 so they'll be fitted externally, in Pods……This is not cool lol.
The Pentagon has saturated the general public that this plane is getting retired and they managed that beautifully. But behind the curtain speaks differently. The F22 wasnt even given a generational number means that its capability is not limited only by its tech integration
Great work, as always. Alex, have you done a story of the new fixed wing rotary aircraft by Bell! It's supposed to be a replacement for the majority of bigger helicopters.
When I first heard that they were decommissioning F 22 raptor‘s I said no way it doesn’t make any sense even though they’re almost 2 decades old they are still by far the most dominant fighter in the sky. All they need is upgrades and they’ll be the top fighter in the sky or one of the top fighters in the sky for the next 50 years. there is absolutely no fucking way the United States retires the F 22 raptor anytime soon what they’re gonna do is start adding modern upgrades that the F 35 already has like the new E9X block to which king shoot down a fucking fighter behind the F 35 and that’s possible because the F 35s computer can see in every direction all they have to do is upgrade the F 22s computer to the onboard computer that is on the F 35 and add some aim 9X Block2 Missiles and the F 22 raptor will be able to shoot down a MiG or Sukhoi that is chasing it
Get well
Thanks Alex! All the health for my rocker!
If the F-22 is sent to a region, that region's airspace has a new owner
I bet the F22 could take on a 7th generation fight when it comes out… F22 is King
Air Supremacy not superiority. There isn't an aircraft that has been made that stands a chance against an F22 in full combat. Don't forget in wargames Stealth is not allowed and the F22's have to carry Droptanks to slow them down. America will purposefully go into wargames with the intention of losing as, and I quote, "You don't learn anything new if you win".
Man…..don't apologize for anything. Your content is some of the absolute best in the business, and since our business is world class, that makes your content some of the best in the world.
China is excited to copy that new upgrades..😂
Just add it to our tab.
Strategists don't think in the future they live in the future in the seen that, done that way. It was particularly painful predicting with certainty the cancellation of the plane. It was a matter of what treasonist excuse the O administration would issue forth. That part isn't exactly predictable if the puppets installed by China and Russia have been selected because they aren't the sharpest or even hardest working tools in the shed.
Many knew exactly where this was heading. Having an air superiority plane cancelled wasn't just part of the prediction. The F-22 was not for export there would be nothing to sustain it economically. The real treasonist part is going against the Defense Production Act (DPA) of which the President has authority to by any means necessary continue production. The F-15 fleet was aging. As predicted, the F22 COULD NOT be reproduced no matter how much the Air Force wanted to spend on it or even the better F-23.
It was a nailbiter but there was another prediction. Based on US keep ahead of Moore's Law and the OODA loop in economics the Finite Element Analysis would evolve the "M" in CAD/CAM. The change in manufacturing would accelerate production. In effect, the cancellation of the plan would be in the US favor because upgrades to the F-22 can also be done much faster, and new next generation aircraft could be developed at lower cost.
Having less inventory, thanks to that president, would work in the US military's favor. Find out for yourself how many programs the president cancelled putting us into this position. The key in all these strategical ramblings is that the longer China delays its challenge the worse it gets for them because the loss of economic power is shaking operatives lose. Military has rebounded from the "Insider Ploys" plaguing them and the procurement programs. Though time is of the essence, production is around the corner and the CCP lost sight that the US excels in design and production.
It's evolution that wins wars.
I’ve had the privilege of seeing an F2 2 raptor many times in my life. And I don’t care what any of the haters say. This plane doesn’t just look scary and sleek. It sounds scary. Being a totally blind person. I’ve never actually gotten to touch the aircraft. The closest thing I have done is owned a few models.. i’m hoping that once it is retired, they can finally let me walk up to it, and actually touch the thing. But until that time comes, it will forever rule my Soundsystem and my toybox. I’ve been to several airshows and recorded it. That’s what I mean by my sound system.
Ahh yes uprgrades right and left but yet nothing is going to happen.Remeber USA has only got 186 F22s😂😂😂
Really Wish Airforce got the YF-23 and Navy got the YF-22 carrier variant.
Thanks Obama
Were surrounded!😢
F22: ..Finally!
A real challenge! 😎
The F35 has a huge thermal signature
Everything getting upgraded as soon as they leave the production line
"I'd intercept me"
