  1. 'Belay' is an order we spcificly do not use in the Nuclear Navy: it is too easily confused with delay on sound powered phone communications. But Star Trek is based on Napoleanic War Era British Navy so writers can't seem to get away from it somehow though it makes modern era sailors cringe when they hear it every time. My Dad couldn't even use it in WWII, and the Navy Instructors really cracked down on us in the Cold War about NEVER using Belay

  2. Undoubtedly a great episode but only made me regret their can never be a stare down contest between Dr. Lazarus played by Alan Rickman and Mr. Spock played by Leonard Nimoy.

  4. I had a blast doing the watch along, especially once I got rid of the ludicrous commercial breaks on my phone app. Erica, Dom and Mark did a stellar job and loved the support for the Virtual Trek Con Pre-con!

  5. Dominic still looks youthful, and I like his Three Musketeers look (appropriate with the Porthos plushie) as it suits him. I remember him back in Desmond's! From Peckham to outer space…

  6. Back story on the weapon, "The Death Carrot", is that it was built by the Talosians for their war with The Borg, and after they chased The Borg back to The Delta Quadrant with their collective tails between their legs, they then used it in their civil war, which all but destroyed their world. The weapon had learned to assimilate tech from The Borg and upgraded itself to the planet eating Death Carrot we all know and love.

  7. Next episode: Balance of Terror. Along with City on The Edge of Forever, this may be one of the six or so best episodes of television ever produced and maybe the best in the series. It's my favorite, but there are a few in close second, like today's episode: The Doomsday Machine.

  8. Sad to hear that Manny Coto passed away, sounds like he was a great guy. Season 4 of Enterprise is one of my favorite seasons out of the entire franchise and Odyssey 5 is an underrated sci-fi classic. RIP 🖖

  11. Another story from a Star Trek Grand Slam convention held in Pasadena . I became acquainted with William Windom over a three Conventions held in Pasadena. During that time he went from the Big Name Actors Autograph room to the one off the convention centers main room next to the snack bar. The last time I saw him a asked with some concern as to why he was in this room? He said to me , Mark its good to see you. Its too damn far to walk to have a cigarette so I asked them to put me next to the door to the parking lot. I just put tape on the door so I can come in and out. He was next to the underground parking and would go outside the door lean on the trunk of his car and smoke. The Man was on oxygen. Very old school guy but he was very kind.

  12. For “Tommorrow is Yesterday”

The “Tomorrow is Yesterday" episode correctly predicted Apollo 11 launch day correct !!

A Wednesday – A radio report referring to the launch of the first moon landing mission on "Wednesday".
Despite this episode being written at least two years earlier, the reference coincidentally gives the actual day of week it occurred, Wednesday July 16 1969

  13. Nice Stream guys! One of my favorite episodes of TOS. In Star Trek Online the game, the Doomsday Machine is one tough cookie! James Doohan's son, Chris, voices his father's character in the Task Force Operation to save a Starbase against a Doomsday Machine. Scotty builds warp cores to feed to the Doomsday Machine to kill it.
Chris Doohan would be a great guest to have. I'm sure he would have some great stories of when he was on set with his father back in the day.

  14. Hello! I love your show. According to the excellent behind-the-scenes reference series, “These Are The Voyages, Vol. 2”, Nichelle Nichols had a singing gig when that episode was filmed. I believe that most times she was missing, that was the situation. I highly recommend this series if you don’t already know about it.

  15. Apparently, during filming, the Moby Dick reference didn't occur to William Windom, so his performance was informed only by what he read in the script.

On of the effects of traditional syndicated television was that nothing that happened in one episode was ever mentioned in any other episode, so the Doomsday Machine was never mentioned again. Which in canon means that the Federation was never capable of reproducing the technology. Think of how valuable neutronium hulls would have been fighting the Borg or the Dominion!

  17. I'm just getting to see this now been busy like crazy since Saturday. Great to see ya back Dom, missed ya bro.

This was always one of my favorites. This one, Balance of Terror, Space Seed, Mirror Mirror, City on the Edge of Forever, for just running three seasons they managed many LEGENDARY episodes in that short run.

To me the first season of the original series is incredible and the second season though not overall as good (to me at least) as the first had some very strong episodes that were as good as any and the Doomsday Machine is one of em.

Thanks for the shows, I look forward to em whenever I'm finally able to see em. Good stuff, many happy future episodes.

  18. I heard that they tried to get Robert Ryan to play Decker.
Kirk’s wrap around uniform was only in season 2. It’s not shown in season 3.

William Windom had a great performance.

  19. I drove from Cali to Wisconsin and back in 2011. My favorite part was when you come down from the plateu into Salt Lake City, I saw two cars going 100+ and I joined them all the way down, it was really fun… a month earlier on my way up to the plateau from SLC, it was Sunny out, but it had just rained, so all the way up the cliffs & rocks were wet and shining in the Sun with every color you could imagine, purple, orange, yellow, red, green – making an amazing pastel landscape… it was beautiful, never seen anything like it… and I'm sure it was a very rare experience… that short time between the rain, and the Sun drying all the cliffs / rocks off…
