“The Engineer” tells the story of two childhood friends working on the railways in the Midlands. Their occupations eventually lead them to Italy where a chance encounter with a beautiful young woman leaves their friendship fractured and broken, with devastating results.

“Mugby Junction” is a set of short stories written in 1866 by Charles Dickens and collaborators Charles Collins, Amelia B. Edwards, Andrew Halliday, and Hesba Stretton. It was first published in a Christmas edition of the magazine All the Year Round.
