The Elie, Manitoba F5 Tornado

During the evening of June 22, 2007, an unassuming summer tornado over rural Canada underwent a surprising transformation no one could have predicted. The result would be a unique event of destructive proportions never seen before or since in the entire country.

From Wikipedia: During the evening of June 22, 2007, a powerful F5 tornado struck the town of Elie, in the Canadian province of Manitoba (40 km (25 mi) west of Winnipeg). It was part of a small two-day tornado outbreak that occurred in the area and reached a maximum width of 150 yards. The tornado was unusual because it caused the extreme damage during its roping out stage at a mere 35 yards (32 m) in width and moved extremely slowly and unpredictably. The tornado tracked primarily southeast, as opposed to the usual northeast, and made multiple loops and sharp turns. Because Environment Canada adopted the Enhanced Fujita scale in 2013, there will be no more tornadoes with an F5 rating, making this tornado the first and last confirmed F5 tornado in Canada.

  3. Thank you for including the Fahrenheit temperatures as well as the Celsius ones…I can do o.k. with meters, kilometers, etc., but I just cannot wrap my mind around Celsius air temperatures..they always seem so low, or cold, even when it's warm or hot…30 or 40 degrees just does not register as warm in my mind…

  4. …Sounds like this tornado behaved much like the Jarrell, Texas tornado in it's skinny beginning, rapidly intensifying, and moving slowly in an odd path…on another note…this was an F-5?..maybe so, but if this was an F-5 and the 2013 El Reno tornado was an F-3(or EF-3), then my mother was the witch from the Wizard of Oz….
