Oh cool. My dad was one of the designers of the original VLF TWA for TACAMO. When I was a kid, he used to fly out of Waco in a modified C-130 to test the 5-mile antenna and the circling maneuver they had to do to get the wire more or less vertical.
He has a story about how ice build up on the antenna would sometimes make it too heavy for the motoes to reel it back in. The test pilots would waggle the plane up and down to "whip crack" the wire and knock enough ice off to retrieve it. Otherwise they had to cut it loose to fall into the gulf.
Take comfort, my friends. The extremely rich old men who have made us all targets for nuclear warfare by spending billions of dollars of our money on it also spent many more billions of dollars of our money to ensure their own survival.

For dealing with EMP’s wouldn’t the US put out a warning and shut off the grid to minimize emp damage? I know that’s the basic plan for a major solar event, though we’d have more warning time with a solar event. Key sites would be hardened and the grid would be restored afterwards.
Such an high altitude EMP is what I thought was on that balloon we let float over the entire northern part of the country. Or a bioweapon. I'm glad our leadership took quick and decisive action.

So on 9/11 who was in the E4-B? It was flying over the White House. It was photographed doing so. There were S.S. agents on the roof pointing to it flying over the White House. Bush was in Air Force one. Unable to communicate effectively on that day for some strange reason. Donnie Scumsfeld went missing for a half an hour immediately after the attack. Then was photographed carrying stretchers of injured Pentagon staff members to helicopters. I guess the Secretary of Defense had nothing better to do on that day but do photo ops. There were photos taken of another E4-B parked next to Airforce One on 9/11 where Bush was that day. In Florida.
So, one E4-B was flying around Washington DC without the Secretary of defense in it on 9/11. Funny,huh? The other one was with the president at a kids school reading lesson. Then we're attacked by cough,cough idiots who couldn't fly Cessna 172's. To top it off our most sophisticated air defense system failed. Our doomsday planes were " busy" giving aerial tours of Washington DC and the other one was in Florida at a grade school book reading. Sure.

ssssoooooo…..if there's a giant EMP that fries all electronics….and the E-4B is the only plane protected against EMPs. how do the KC-135s still function….? I mean, i guess if they're out of range, but if it's something big and global, like a coronal mass ejection – wouldn't they be fried too? so, great, the super plane is functional, but there's no way to refuel. If they're not running at the time, thay'd probably be functional? but the air traffic control stations would be fried. and satellites. so no communication. the five-mile cable is neat, but it's got to have a limit.
they've probably figured that out. I bet it's a small wormhole to funnel fuel from storage to the plane. that's gotta be it. am i over thinking? i'm probably overthinking.
