In this chapter of “The Dream of the Red Chamber,” Pao-yü attends a feast and listens to fairy songs. The Monitory Vision Fairy warns him about the dangers of licentious love and initiates him into its mysteries. Pao-yü falls in love with K’o Ching, whom the Fairy gives to him as his wife. They go for a walk and come across the Ford of Enticement, where Pao-yü is dragged down by goblins and sea-urchins. He calls out for help in his dream, and Mrs. Ch’in hears him using her infant name, but she cannot understand why.
