The Donora Pennsylvania smog 1948; Pennsylvania’s own “London Smog”:
In 1948, a mysterious toxic fog swept over a small industrial town in Donora, PA. The yellow tinted smog made reduced the visibility to nearly zero and quickly began making people sick. It is regarded as the worst air pollution disaster in U.S. history.
What ended up being a significant industrial disaster – which had a lot of things in common with the Great London Smog that occurred a few years later – lead the way to new U.S. laws which helped to regulate air pollution. In a way, this event was a combination of industrial disaster and natural disaster which ended in tragedy. Watch this disaster documentary about the Donora, Pennsylvania smog to witness a truly fascinating horror story.

"An act of God"? Wow. Blaming everyone and everything else just to avoid losing money while people were literally dying. That's just beyond disgusting.
Wow I remember hearing this story from my Father. They always chalked things up to an act of god if they thought they could get away with it.
It's amazing that they would rather let people did than cease operation for just a few day. Although there's no telling if they realized how much the mill played a part of it or not…. I mean look at Chernobyl …. they refused to believe what was happening until they were literally dying themselves lol. The mill foreman wouldn't wanna look bad to the shareholders huh?
Great video bud! You're killing it!

I remember reading about a woman who had moved to Donora when her husband got a job at one of the plants. About a month later, she got out her newest dress to wear to a dinner party. It was discolored and ruined. She later learned that the men in town never bought blue suits, because they would turn brown after a month.
Same thing that happened in London a few years later.
Great coverage of a disaster worth covering. Thanks for explaining how it all happened, in regards to the air flows etc.
Temperature inversions are not rare. These happen nearly every calm night and can be especially noticeable in valleys and in colder weather. In western PA you either live on a mountain or in a valley. Freezing rain is common, and freezing rain is the result of a strong temperature inversion.
Where I live in western Colorado the valley winter cold-pool can persist for weeks, especially if there is snow on the ground. The climate of western PA is another beast entirely however, and the atmosphere less prone to stagnation than the arid and semi-arid west.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I remember my parents talking about the smog in London and especially one time they got lost trying to visit one of my aunts who actually lived on the same road.
Im 49, been here all my life, and now the town has NOTHING. No Bank, Gas Station or Grocery store. Must travel minimum of 3 miles each way to do any of those things. The Mills up and left and took all the Stores n'at they put here. Sad the towns gone, but those here are as strong today as they were when this town was THE HUB of the Mid Mon Valley
Act of God? Did they sue him as well?
incredible vidja! thank you for your diligence
I’m so sick of massive corporations basically getting a slap on the wrist for environmental disasters they cause. If they are made to pay any damages, they’re always a paltry fraction of what they should cover. Decades later and nothing has really changed.
Now that it’s public knowledge that fossil fuel companies commissioned their own studies that discovered they were causing climate change and actively chose to deny it and spread as much misinformation as possible. Just like Big Tobacco was taken to court and found responsible for hiding the dangers of smoking and blatantly lying to customers, the same should be done to Big Oil.
They have harmed the future and the lives of younger generations and the damage continues. No wonder so many of us have little hope for the future.
I really enjoyed this. New sub. Hi from Katanning Western Australia xxx 😂
Bet some of this stuff is still in the soil down where all the mills used to be in Pittsburgh and even up here an hour or so north and even into Youngstown, OH.
Absolutely in love with the "Modern Marvels" style voice
thanks for information
This is cool! I lived in donora for a while about 20 years ago. It wasn’t a death smog but Donora still has had the thickest craziest fog I’ve ever experienced!
The background ringing is awful, please don’t use it again.
This is happening now 2023 >
In all the world on a whole.
