The Digital Gate – How effects ACTUALLY work in Digimon

Jorel brings you a special episode of the Digital Gate, where he goes in-depth on how effects work in digimon, common rulings that are asked a lot, as well as misconceptions that people can have of the game.

Addendum that I’ll probably put in a pinned comment, but I’ll leave it in here cause I’ll probably be asleep when the video goes live;

For “What effects a Digimon sees”, I want to add on that the card must be present on the board when a timing like [Start of Main Phase] or [Start of Your Turn] is hit. An example of this is BlackWarGreymon X rebooting on the opponent’s turn, deleting your EmperorGreymon. With Emperor’s [On Deletion], you can play out BT12 Takuya, but since Takuya wasn’t on the board when [Start of Your Turn] happened, he cannot set your memory to 3.

  1. Quick addendum that I want to point out:

    For "What effects a Digimon sees", I want to add on that the card must be present on the board when a timing like [Start of Main Phase] or [Start of Your Turn] is hit. An example of this is BlackWarGreymon X rebooting on the opponent's turn, deleting your EmperorGreymon. 2. So I've been playing purple wrong motivated by pure carefulnes.
    So: I if use "calling from the darkness" on a digimon that has 2 "on Deletion" effects on sources, and return said digimon to hand, the "on Deletion" still activate due to only needing the top digimon on trash???

  3. So a small correction at 11:08. Xros is not an effect at all, its a game mechanic and thus a game rule. Game mechanics/game rules are not effects and this is very important. For instance effects cannot trigger or active in the breeding area unless the card says so. However if you were to say play a Xros digimon via BigUkkomon into the breeding area you could infact Xros since Xros is not an effect but a game mechanic. This also applies to Burst Digivolution and alternative evolution conditions. You know its a game rule and not a effect when they have their own unique text area, usually a black box. This is also why options cards can see colors in breeding for its color requirements but cant see the color if its a alternate condition printed on the card like Heavens judgment. The game rules can see if you have a yellow digimon in breeding but the effect on the card cant see if you have a green digimon in breeding since its an effect.

  4. For 9:50 if you ever come back to this topic in a future video i feel it would be worthwhile to bring up the difference between Trigger Condition and Activation Condition as that is the core way you can universally tell if your OPT is used up or not.

  5. can use an effect that unsuspend my digimon even if it is unsuspendid the effect did nothing? and the card ist just used up?
    Example Victory sword St8 011 dose the rule " If an effect unsuspends a card that's already unsuspended, it doesn't count as unsuspending" hence cannot resolve right?

  6. 19:12 since in the attack flowchart “suspending” to declare an attack happens before the digimon chooses an attack target, and before its ‘when attacking’ effects trigger, does bt16 togemogumon trash a source before an opponent’s digimon activates ‘when attacking’ effects? what would then happen to the attack if togemogumon trashed the only source, would the attack attempt fizzle at the “select your opponent or one of their suspended digimon” phase?

  7. I don't get how Bokomon would save Gammamon collectively with the effect, if I for instance have a red and a purple Gammamon with a Bokomon on the field, opponent plays DeathXmon or Crimson Blaze, he would wipe my board at the same time no?

    According to what you said in the video it sounds like I could JUST sacrifice the Bokomon and both my Gammas would live, one would even evolve in this case. At most I feel like you could only save one in that instance, not both.

  8. I was working on a sim and was already having nightmares about making the effect resolution system. This made everything so crystal clear! It's much simpler and less chaotic than anticipated
