A very promising start from a brand with a bit of an advantage. The dial is really lovely, and does a far better impression of actual waves that the likes of Omega and Seiko manage. Bit of pot luck sizing it though, so best worn loose! Cheers, Jody

  2. There's a lot to like about this one I think. Finishing looks very well executed, and that bracelet, caseback, and dial are quite nice considering the price. As pointed out though, I don't think that overall the design makes sense. In more ways than one. I have a tip for you, Jody. I saw while browsing Amazon for watches earlier, a men's Tissot, "Coutourier" 39mm, w/ a Powermatic 80 movement on a bracelet for $250.66!!!! And thats a Prime item, so free 2 day shipping and returns. That I think, is a fantastic value, but there was only one left. Hopefully this tip finds you well, and in time. Merry Christmas, Jody, and thanks for all your hard work and effort in 2022. Cheers

  3. Brands probably put Automatic on the dial to be easily identified in static shots. Granted, "Automatic" is a bit generic, but bigger brands do this all the time: The Tag Heuer Aqua Racer has "Caliber 5" on its Autos to easily differentiate from the otherwise caliber-nondescript Quartz models. Likewise, the original Bond era Seamasters featured dials with no Caliber description on the quartz models, whereas the Autos had the addition of "Chronometer" on the dial, which essentially just means "automatic/mechanical," albeit a highly accurate one (by COSC standards of -4/+6 sec/day).

In both instances, it makes identifying these autos from their quartz counterparts much easier in static shots. Now, admittedly, Holmr does not make a quartz version of this watch, however, the marketing value still remains: A potential customer can easily identify the watch as an automatic by JUST a static photo of the watch. Now they don't make the movement, and the Miyota is not notably accurate, so they can boast neither the caliber name nor a COSC accuracy grade, but the base level message still gets across. Virtually every other product does this in some way to denote a desired aspects of their product, be it a V8 over a V6 trim of sports car, or a high performance gaming laptop over a lower powered general use one.

In summary, I see no issue to highlight an automatic movement on a watch dial, as, let's be real, it is generally the desired type for watch enthusiasts. "Automatic" certainly is on the blander side of branding, but in lieu of an in house, or particularly special movement, I don't know if I can think of anything better, and having such credentials usually starts at the four figure price point.

And yes, before anyone freaks out, I am fully aware of the Tag Heuer controversy: "their" movement, the "Caliber 5," is nothing more than either an ETA 2824 or a Sellita SW-200 (they used both) with a decorated rotor, making it NOT an in house by even the most lax definition. As such, for that watch, Tag Heuer really didn't have any business naming someone else's movement and therefore, the watch really was overpriced for what it was, sailing solely on either the TAG, or the Heuer name.

  4. The Grand Seiko SLGA007 is one of my grail watches, never seen such a gorgeous dial… until now. Unfortunately, where the GS accents the amazing pattern with well proportioned hands and indices, this watch is kind of a letdown with those skinny and, let’s be honest, fairly boring batons all around. I think it tries to toe the line between dress and diver, but errs on both counts because of it. That said, if a V2 has a more sensible bracelet and steps up the hands and indices, I’d buy one in a second.

  5. Jody I don't know who to feel the most sorry for, you for having to review this so, so, sadd little watch or that Holmr Epifarer thinking they are a watch company, $529.00 USD is so laughable, think of how many Seikos, G-Shocks, Luminox, Orient etc., etc., you could purchase for the price of this failure!

  6. Darn!! I love it the way it is. The taper is perfect, I just hope they have it for Big wrists as well. Thanks a lot for a great clip and this time you actually pursuaded me to go buy another watch 🙂 I love the complete package, well done Holmr and thanks Jodie.

  7. Def seem to have copied the Venezianeco Nereide bracelet and made it look a little better. But at least Venezianeco includes a rubber strap with the Nereide.

  8. I don't understand why microbrands keep sending prototypes out for review accompanied by a promise that the lume will be better on the production models. Shouldn't there be a formula for "X number of layers of type Y lume equals Z hours of visibility?" That said, the wave dial is great.

  9. Nice looking watch.

It is strange, now you mention it, saying Automatic. I suppose the ticking should give it away. But I do look for it I have to admit. Even though only one of my collection is an auto

  10. Like the dial…..new year resolution related to watches…I will not buy any more stupid stealth watches. Just got a king Casio….I can't read it. What is more useless than a watch you can't read! They always look more legible online. So no more!

  12. Great review, Jody. A lot to like about this one………..Love the dial, case, bracelet etc… The text on the reverse is a bit out of whack… but that doesn't bother me too much (you'll not see it when the watch is on your wrist). The butterfly clasp is a great choice, HOWEVER, as you quite rightly pointed out, this type of closure is really hit and miss without half links (for this reason the HOLMR Epifarer won't be on my shopping list, as I just won't take a punt on a 'will it fit or won't it' timepiece….a real shame). A dive style adjustable clasp would still have looked just O.K. Decent value for the specs.
