That "human shield" thing is UC propaganda. The glorious UC Navy can't admit they lost against Freestar's citizen militia, so they spun this tale about human shields instead and later founded the Vanguard, because they saw how useful it was to recruit civilian pilots.
The expanse is so good. Its my favourite sci-fi series, you would definitely love it. Is the hat guy the detective? He was weirdly cool and reminded me of a character Alan Wake would write🤣
