Over the past 10k years they don’t even know how to make proper custodes anymore, and they’re not exactly on the forefront of action.. it’s safe to say an astartes could kill a custode one on one
It's actually surprising the Emperor didn't assign custodes to every Legion as a liaison the whole time.

I wonder, do the Custodes know that Lion has returned? The Emperor knows it, but the Custodes too? They will probably get quite nervous. Even when Lion was and is the best and most loyal of all Primarchs, as well as his legion. Easily on par with the Imperial Fists (okay maybe the fists are a tiny bit more loyal)
