THE CROWN Season 5 Episode 6: "Ipatiev House" Reaction & Review | FRF

Here’s my reaction & review to The Crown, 5×06 entitled, “Ipatiev House”.

Series Synopsis via Wikipedia: The fifth season of The Crown, which follows the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II, was released by Netflix on November 9, 2022. It was the first season of the series to be released following both the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on April 9, 2021, and the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022. Imelda Staunton stars as Elizabeth, along with main cast members Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, Jonny Lee Miller, Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki. All cast members are new to the series; this season marked The Crown’s second and final wholesale recasting, following the ensembles led by Claire Foy (seasons 1 and 2) and Olivia Colman (seasons 3 and 4).

Logline via IMDB: Eager to lead a newly democratic Russia, President Yeltsin tries to win the Queen’s support while she navigates new rifts in her marriage with Philip.

  1. I have to admit to being torn about the deaths of the Romanovs, Nicholas II and his wife ruled Russia with an iron fist and were brutal tyrants. But their kids did not deserve to be killed and the manner in which the Bolsheviks had the Romanovs killed just made them martyrs.

  2. I could be wrong but I have a feeling that people's attitude towards this season is due to 1. Its recency, 2. The facts (what happened in the 90s), 3. The main characters having aged
But I loved this season so much!! I was very impressed by the acting and just loved the storytelling. Ah it was so good.

  3. If I learned anything from 6 seasons of Downton Abbey and Mary and Edith…that kind of rivalry between women of that time and that class whose whole lives couldn't really "begin" and then were "deemed" by their marriage…I buy into the theory somewhat.

As to Queen Mary and King George V being capable….technically it was possible, but politically it was weighing a lot. The tide was beginning to shift in how royalty was seen(the Romanovs were executed by a revolt by the people), A lot of monarchies were coming into scrutiny and 1917 was a year short of WWI ending, when there was a lot of anti-german sentiment. Removing themselves from trouble and conflict from the losing and trouble having sides. In fact 1917 is the year that King George V introduced the House of Winsor, the royal's family name as he denounced some of their own German notations to qwuell the public. So it was a hard choice given how basically all monarchy at that time was either closely or distantly related (Both Philip and Elizabeth shared the same great-great-grandmother and are third cousins themselves) and as seen in Downton Abbey, 'careers' in aristocracy meant traveling to each other's palaces, attending balls, and celebrating seasons, hunts, etc. So you knew these people…but in the end there has to be loyalty to the thing you believe serves most purpose. We saw it clearly in season one what queen Mary thought about the Crown's purpose(that's who Mary was, the same grandmother we saw in season one) was and how nothing was above it….which would be a call back and this is the moment that solidified her belief because otherwise…how could she live with her decision? (Oh and the son in the middle was probably prince David, King Edward VIII, because Elizabeth's dad had that horrible stutter even into adulthood)

  4. I’m shocked at how accurately they portrayed the Romanov murders. The daughters actually had millions of dollars worth of jewelry sewn into their clothes just in case they were able to flee the country, so they acted like bullet proof vests and it around 20 minutes to successfully kill them. It was beyond fucked up.

  5. I mean this in the context of the show, not the irl people and history: How sad it is that after all those years together Phillip keeps looking outside for companionship and fun in others when Elizabeth was right there, always there.

  6. I think i am in the Elizabeth side more on the Romanov situation because as far as i know from Queen Mary in season 1 i think she is saying no to the Romanov because it will danger the royal family, Elizabeth right now is similar to what queen Mary in season 1

  7. the people at breakfast in 1917 were Queen Mary, George V and shady nazi David. i think the theory given by Elizabeth was the correct one i.e. the monarchy knew they were risking being overthrown themselves if they offered asylum to the Romanovs…i loved Elizabeth's moment with the headscarf before meeting Penny, 'mmm, i think i'll go full Queen today'

  8. 19:41 well yeah but if you were a dude the thought might not even cross your mind. Nothing wrong with a female friend. My wife can't be the only woman in my life, although she did divorce me for cheating but that's besides the point. First 10 mins of the episode was a shock to the system but loving this season so far and Elizabeth's iron curtain joke was 🔥

  9. The Queen seen in the beginning of the episode is a younger Queen Mary from season 1, Queen Elizabeth’s grandmother, and wife of King George V as shown in this episode. The Queen’s great-grandmother was Queen Alexandra who was alive during the events shown in this episode, but she is not portrayed on The Crown. Which is a shame; she’s my favorite consort.

By the way, the “other man” shown in the episode was indeed the Duke of Windsor, Elizabeth’s uncle.

  10. I don't believe that the Tsarina proximity to the Germans had anything to do with the Romanovs not being rescued. Russia was in the War against Germany and Austria (the revolution in part was caused by the people being against the war and the famine it caused. The bolsheviks were the ones who surrendered by the Brest-Litovsk Treaty). King George was also the Kaiser's first cousin. All European monarchs were close relatives and War happened despite that.

  11. The romanovs are a interesting story. By all means the king didnt have it easy BUT he is 100% at fault for loosing his live and power. Wilhelm the 2nd had bad luck, the romanovs were just incompetent

  12. FYI everyone, my video for 5×07 is ready to go, but unfortunately the Air BnB that I'm staying at has temporarily lost internet. So I won't be able to upload it right now. But as soon as we get the internet back, I'll upload it ASAP.

  13. I'm a historian. That rivalry theory was probably just invented by the series; queen Mary was expected to marry her husband from the beginning; she was always to marry the British royal heir and was first engaged to the elder brother, and when he died she was engaged to the younger. Alexandra (who became Russian empress was in love with the future tsar for many years before she married him, years before George and Mary married.

Yes, the British royal family would have saved the Romanovs if they had allowed them to come to England. The Russian government would have been happy to let them go. I never heard that Mary had anything to do with it, but I know that the British royal family did not want the Romanovs to come because they were afraid that it would give the wrong impression and damage the British monarchy.
