Maybe he's from Castle Schrade (Sorry if wrong) where the castle got destoryed and some of the people evacuated. No evidance but since the castle destroyed by fatalis and no record of other human places got destroyed by it. Why it got destroyed by fatalis? Probably because this Scarlet Mystery Man was actually in group of people who was learning about Fatalis, but make fatalis furious and destroy the castle. Why it appear in most mh games quest? This group of Scarlet Mystery Man were survived and want to tell the truth of no one believed, they forced to live and tell their generation about it. About coat? bruh idk, maybe it official clothes for scientist from the castle? But anyway, its just a theory that I got and probably I miss some information
Wasn't there an ancient civilization that fatalis destroyed. What if he is the last surviving person of this civilization. Somehow still alive after all those years like a deity. He saw what the black dragon did and decided to create the guild to make hunters strong enough to fight monsters and to learn from the ancients mistakes.
Maybe Scarlet Mystery Man is an elven who can resonate with the monster and keep intel for the guild? Just maybe the next MH updates or new series will reveal the historical facts about eleven kingdom which had been demolished long time ago before Kamura time in MHR franchise.
Most of them seems to be just repeat quests in different versions of the game.

You shouldnt have used that map, it is full of mistakes like putting the tower and great forest in the main continent instead of Forlon continent or adding extra islands that are not seen in the official map. It is not only invented he just did an arbitrary localization of the places.
imagine if its Kane who killed his brother then got cursed by the gods to be immortal. so he makes hunter fight for his amusement. 😀
I been playing MH since the first one and I this is the first time I hear about this character. I just never read the description and mostly skip dialogues. Hunting is all I ever cared about with MH.
Anyway, I feel like he could be just a reference to Dante from DMC. It is a Capcom game, they do that pretty often. Also, in MH World you can get Dante's set, so maybe thats why the Scarlet guy isnt in quest descriptions for that game. Because instead of a reference, you can dress up as him.

I'd like to think that the first scarlet mystery man was one of the founders of the hunters' guild, then chooses a successor based on who actually does the quests he/she posts (this being our player character ofcourse). When the previous scarlet mystery man then dies (of old age, or other reasons), the successor takes on his master's role and keeps the cycle going.
This is assuming that what we mean by "man" is "human" in figure, because a suspicious person would be stopped by the guild upon handing in a request. This ties into all other player's previous characters in various other games being the ones who continue to pass the torch, from the very firsr game to the latest one.
PS Been playing MH games since the release on PSP, and all other MH games after that, up till Iceborne (cuz idk why I don't like how MHR is faring atm, good combat system but the environment just feels dead, unlike MHWIB) but this topic is something I never really took notice of, so thanks for bringing this up!

Seems to me Scarlet mystery man is more of a Scarlet mystery organization to me at least would make the timeline of him make more sense.

I think the theories could just come together and make a cool concept o him.
Maybe, he is a wyverian figure or not, but it could be part of an extremely exclusive cult or circle that seeks out the strongest hunters to inform them and be prepared for a calamity, lead by a black dragon or an elder dragon.
The resonance is extemely interesting for this, but the bad thing is, its the first time it appears, we dont hae anything like it before so it looks like a narrative tool moe than world building, but i wish it gets added later on.
It might be an association that keeps this information out o the general public to not cause any trouble, but uses the guild to seek for help… so the guild has to be partially involved… they have to know, they are the ones that bring you to the quests and the ones that give you the zeni… I wish they expend this, or at least confirm in some way that the resonance from Hinoa and Minoto with the serpents, is an ability they actually use to forseek this events of doom.

Just an old wyverian
If we get a malzeno variant in one of the final sunbreak updates that would be a cool quest to be given by the scarlet mystery man considering the scarlet feast & stuff like the quest description of the gold/silver rath quest saying “The moon demands fresh blood!”. He seems like a very good match for malzeno to me.
I think he's some type of immortal, I even could speculate he's some kind of monster that can shape-shift.
I always believed it was a title given to a special class of hunters that have nothing better todo but test other hunters. Like the old hunter stereotypes that have trophies on the wall sitting in big chair by a fireplace. The type that bet on big game.
I feel like in the next MH game after Rise/Sunbreak, the dev should add a new "black dragon" and expand just a tiny bit more of Scarlet Mystery Man and make us hunters dwell on this topic even more

One of the things I find odd is how we know that wyverians are particularly long lived compared to humans, but act like someone living 1,000 years in this universe is a big deal. Frankly I feel like many of the older wyverians must of lived during the fall of the ancient civilization.
I remember this dude’s quests from back in the day, and I thought even then he was a dragon in human form. With sunrise, a human suffering from resonance makes more sense now. Their strange speech patterns even sound alike.
