Im not sure if this is the same crash but years ago I watched many episodes of the tv series Mayday/aircrash investigation. There was one story of where they interviewed a flight attendant who felt very guilty because she told a woman to put her child onto the floor which was apparently the emergency landing procedure at the time. Well when the plane crash happened the baby slid under the seats and was never seen alive again. The mother apparently came crying to the flight attendant and told her that if she had just held onto the baby in her lap then the baby would still probably be alive. If I remember correctly they did change the procedures then regarding babies and crash landings. I have a feeling it was this flight because of the children's day deal but honestly I cant remember too well now as I saw this years and years ago.
I still remember watching an Air Crash episode where they were going to land at the airport and since there were many Children on board with nowhere to be seated, they were told by Flight Attendants to put there kids on the floor with there hand holding them down. When the plane touched down however many of those Children were pulled away underneath the floor giving way. I still remember the aftermath a Female passenger came to that same Flight attendant and told her. YOU SAID MY BABY WOULD BE FINE! And I lost my Baby. Boy did that ever hit me. I can only imagine the Flight Attendant probably still living with that Guild to this Day. Horrible absolutely Horrible!
I’m originally from Omaha and remember watching live updates on one of the local news stations in Omaha. They had a camera crew in Sioux City. I watched as the plane came in, go behind some buildings and then seeing a fireball and smoke when it broke apart. I get goose bumps to this day thinking back on it.
This flight gets my vote for the most heroic preservation of life in aviation history. Sully’s right up there too, as is the Air Alaska crew.
Capitalism at it's finest. This is a true example of why less regulation rather than market forces should guide these events. No one is forced to fly, let alone fly United.

I remember this, it seemed like it was on TV for days and days, replay after replay of it bursting into flames. Pretty freaky to watch.
We were supposed to be on that flight, I changed the tickets the day before. We were returning to NAS Rota,Spain after my brother’s funeral in California.
I highly, highly recommend the Errol Morris HBO documentary series called First Person. Dennis Fitch discusses the flight, its background, issues with the DC-10 and his own history as a check airman instructor. I highly recommend it. Sad fact one of the people that died in the crash was Continental Basketball Association Commissioner Jay Ramsdell. He was one of the youngest commissioners in sports at age 25.

My parents were both first responders to this disaster (firefighter and emt). My dad still remembers survivors emerging from the corn field.
Talk about a moment in timespace. An absolute perfect example of what happens when everyone is dedicated to the team and job at hand. No giggles are unprofessional there.
Though this is a truly harrowing tale of loss, it’s also an example of true bravery and comradeship amongst that crew. Many people are alive today because of their amazing teamwork.

How Haynes kept his sense of humour I shall never know. When told that any runway was open to him, he quipped, "You wanna be specific and make it a runway??"
I remember that day very well. I lived in Alta at the time. I hadn't heard about the crash, but as I was headed east on C63 onto Hwy. 110 in Storm Lake, I saw a bunch of emergency vehicles headed west so I knew something big was happening. I knew several people who responded to the scene. Pieces of the fan blade were found on a farm owned by a good friend of mine. This one hit really close to home, figuratively and literally. As I understand it, they actually had an overabundance of first responders at the scene.

The sheer number of crash stories with "survivors zero, survivors zero, survivors zero" makes me appreciate the tiny silver lining of a day when so many lived, even if there were terrible losses

the pos dc 10 with its mickey mouse hydro system lacked redundency and caused this crash. this plane was fundamently unsafe from the onset of its being placed in service. rushed to market to beat the vastly superiour and safer L1011 LOOCKHEED . this isnt the only deadly crash this micky mouse hydro system caused
Another thing the author of this video didn't disclose, was that at the airport that this plane crashed they had a safety training on how to save people after an airplane crash. Not only were all of the employees freshly train and passed strict tests for saving people after emergency crash, but the instructors were there still as well. Plenty of trained staff to help the survivors. Praise GOD!

I was supposed to fly on that plane that day but i extended my stay 1 week longer. On my flight back we landed at the airport where the crash was and saw the scene. We were on the tarnac it was completely black. It was so scary. I was freaked out to fly for years after that. I was 17 years old at the time.

Captain Haynes kept his composure and humor so well that when they were lining up for their approach ATC told him he was cleared to land on any runway he wanted and he laughed on the radio and said, "You want to be particular and make it a runway, huh?"
