So when I reread The Brothers' War novel recently, one of the things I had really forgotten was how before traveling to Argoth, Urza was showing a lot of regret and self awareness about just how brutal he had been. He had thought he was better than Mishra, as he only committed many of the atrocities and war crimes because it was the only way to keep pace with Mishra. But the thing is, the worst possible thing for those around Urza happened. He was proven right; Mishra was an inhuman monster and Urza was justified in his actions to defeat him at any cost. And that is the philosophy that carried for the rest of his days, where he mercilessly sacrificed entire planes, manipulated blood lines to engineer his own perfect soldiers, toyed with the fabric of reality itself, treated the people around him as nothing but resources or tools to use and cast aside when he was finished with them, and wrecked untold havoc and damage in his single minded goal to destroy Phyrexia. It really sets up the character arc right at the beginning, even if the original authors probably hadnt intended it.
