The movie musical version of “The Color Purple” is a dazzling extravaganza, a rousing crowd-pleaser for the holiday season. Director Blitz Bazawule’s film, produced by Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones, is electrifying and inspired over and over again. It’s a familiar story of hardship, hope and redemption, told in a novel way. The ensemble cast is terrific, led by Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Danielle Brooks, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi and Halle Bailey. In theaters Christmas Day.

What are “Corines”? Is that spelling? And why did Christy look so concerned when Alonso said that?
Fatimah Robinson was the late Aaliyah’s principal choreographer! She’s been in the game for a good amount of time. Great to see her still going strong ❤
I was really excited to see The Burial of Kojo before this to get an idea of what the director's style is like… Until about 10 seconds ago when I checked Letterboxd and realized I HAD seen it a few years back, didn't like it much and forgot all about it.
Nothing about watching this story as a musical appeals to me. I liked the Spielberg film well enough, but am just not sold on this.
Can’t wait to see this. Thanks for this review.
Btw, Fa•ti•ma ☺️
I don't care what anyone says, there is no way Out of Africa was a better movie than The Color Purple in 1985. Out of Africa was boring AF.
This review was a delicious addition to my breakfast today. Thank you, and "Have yourself a Merry little Christmas".
Is Fantasia legendary, really?
Oscar winner H.E.R. Is in it as well. I’m seeing it new years: this week I’m seeing:
1. Poor things
2. The Iron Claw
3. Ferrari
Next week:
1. Aquaman 2….sigh
2. The color purple
3. Migration
I have about as much interest in seeing this as I do "Wonka", none at all.
On 1:37 "… regular working day people suddenly burst out into dance without looking like a bunch of KOREANS?"
lol Alonso, please explain. I'm with Christy's face. I'm definitely not hearing that right hahaaa
love the energy you guys are bringing lately, such joie de vivre to accompany the usual cinematic literacy
Thanks for the review! As a HUGE fan of the original, I can’t wait to see this!
🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽💜
Looking forward to this movie. I do love TCP; it hasnt quite aged well but I loved that movie when I watched it years ago.
So, you guys gave your number ratings and I'm curious to hear about what your number ratings were for the 'original' Spielberg one…
Sorry I hope it flops. I hate everything that film stands for with black people. No reason for a retelling. Who wants to see something like this for Christmas
Important to keep in mind the musical film is a reimagination of the Broadway musical and not the original film
Don't tell me let me Guess? The legendary Oscar-Winner Lou Gossett Jr. is protraying "Old Minster" Yeah they been doing a lot of press of this movie. LOL, Happy Holidays.
