The Case of Yara G

On Friday the 26th of November 2010, at 5.15pm, Yara said goodbye to her family, left home, and walked the short distance to her gym. Five hours later, she would die alone in a field while her whole family was out looking for her.
It would be six years before justice was served, but this case is proof of what a justice system is capable of when the police focus on catching a murderer.

  1. Arnaldo: "many people wanted him to be the ideal suspect. – explains how he was an immigrant in an area with anti immigrant sentiment-"

Simon literally the next sentance: "-forgets the contex, wonders if Arnaldo is anti immigrant somehow-"

  2. I suspect that given she was 13 years old, there are certain provisions for accessing the phone's location. Had she been 16 or 18 they may not have been able to.

  3. Mitochondrial DNA follows the female line. Yara get's her mitochondrial DNA from her Mom.

Ester and Yara have different Moms, hence, no match.

Not sure of the exact details, but you can't test the mitochondrial DNA in males for finding familiar matches. (Ancestry explains it on their website).

  4. 30,000 DNA samples… hot damn. Those DNA Techs and Analysts must have been working 24/7 getting all those processed and analyzed. The dragnet approach used is ethically dubious and generally frowned upon in most countries, but it can get results.

My kids were sheltered and my oldest is a behavioral therapist for kids with mental problems. So there can be a balance

  6. Jesus yara and I have a lot in common. I was addicted to gymnastics at thirteen. I was going to be the next Gabby Douglas ( this was before the era of Simone Biles). I lived in the gym and when I wasn’t there I watched YouTube videos of my favorites, Aly Raisman, Kerry Strugg, and of course Gabby.

  7. To clear up the 35:55 confusion of the mitochondrial DNA for viewers, listeners, and Simon who don't know. Basically, mitochondria have their own individual DNA separate from our own. Mitochondrial DNA can only be passed maternally (by mothers). So when you cross-check mitochondrial DNA with a mother and her child it will come out positive but when you cross-check it with the father and his child it will come out negative (since they aren't the same DNA). In this case, Esther's mitochondrial DNA was cross-checked with Yara's mitochondrial DNA which doesn't match Esther's since Yara isn't her child. Hope this helped and if you need more clarification I'd be happy to revise the explanation and chat 😁

  8. So I was watching Dahmer on Netflix and I thought of the casual criminalist. I looked to see if Simon did a episode on it and no he hasn't now how be the time to it Simon would be like "police what are you doing". I'm sure he has a video made and it just hasn't been uploaded yet

  9. DNA only tells part of a story, A+B = C
It tells nothing of any other detail, what, when, why sometimes not even who. Several people have been released from prison on new DNA evidence but it's been estimated the same number have been falsely imprisoned on incorrect interpretation.
