The British Success in Counterinsurgency



Time to examine the British involvement in combating insurgency. The two examples that will be discussed are the Malayan Emergency and the Borneo Insurgency. There are also two individuals who successfully establish strategies to defeat the respective insurgencies, Field Marshal Sir Gerald Templer and Major General Walter Walker.

  1. One thing I should have said and forgot ….my memory isn’t as sharp these days ……those Officers you talked about ……they actually had to order people into combat, knowing some would not come back. They both had see and been ordered into those situations themselves. It s a heavy weight to bear and one that is oft times overlooked and forgotten, which is why they both tried to fight in a way that they could achieve maximum and not lose men heavily.
    Facing any combat you will lose men, war is not gentle and pleasant and there is no reset button if it goes wrong (and it will), imho way to many don’t seem to understand that now, they think we (I mean basically western countries) can fight and only “bad guys” get killed. It doesn’t happen that way.
    Talking tough is one thing ….thinking and planning smartly is another! The best way is not to fight, however if you have to then you plan smartly, think smartly and have the people in place to do that …..I don’t mean yes men ….the Military Chiefs have to be able to stand up and say No, we cannot do that to politicians! If not we will end up in a real mess.
