As horrible as this is, and, to be clear, as not serious as is possible to get, I wonder what the Violent Crimes Rate would be in America if this punishment would be administered today to the most fowl of criminals…
The deterrence effect of harsh prison sentences is obviously a failure, seeing as how perpetrators feel like they've got nothing to lose as soon as they commit any serious crime… Spending your life in a relatively comfortable place (imprisonment is still torture) is NOT a good form of prevention.
A focus on Rehabilitation instead of Punishment, removing Weapons of War from the hands of every civilian and a strong education system is definitely the appropriate course for a society, but from a Sociological & Criminological point of view, I just wonder what would be the effect of the polar opposite, of the most extreme form of deterrance possible if sentences such as the Brazen Bull were administered to Murderers, Pedøph¡les & R@pists.
I know that it would make for a much worse result than going the Civilized Way, as not only these sentences would be incredibly harsh to say the least, but the more insidious & pervert effect on society would be in diminishing the value of a human life. In history, the least a life had value, the more Cruel, Warmonging & Degenerate a Society got. With less value given to life, horrible behavior becomes acceptable, bringing back Slavery first, and many more horrors with it.
All we can do is study the Past Cultures and speculate on what effects bringing back such a punishment would cause… We obviously can't ever (re)create the conditions in real life to study the results, and any really accurate (Computer) Simulation would need to be so elaborate that it would be far past the point where the simulated individuals would have a sense of agency and be able to feel something analogous to Pain in reaction to negative stimuli, and that would immediately make any such Simulation utterly Unethical. So all we can do is wonder, and hope that any scenario even remotely similar to this never comes to be again…

I was always under the impression that the worst torture one could face in the modern day was the dutch oven.
The only difference between now and back then are that punishments are much more lenient. But when it comes to torture, we still think about wanting to put certain people in punishments who deserve it. Whether be it serial killers, rapists, pedophiles, dictators, cannibals, school shooters, etc. Everytime these monsters get a light sentence we are dissatisfied and want them to suffer as much as their victims suffered
